Well, it appears from my well-informed source that the fact it is so easily stopped means that a whole lot of alpha particles get stopped by the cell contents of the body, which leads to massive disruption of stuff like genetic material, failure of all sorts of systems and the growth of cancers all over the place.
Hence not a nice way to die.
