I thought he was quite different in Extras - there he plays the straight man as opposed to being the but of all the jokes in the Office. In Extra's its all the characters around him that are the funny zany ones and he's just normal.
Again with the Podcasts, its Chris Pilkington thats the funny one and Ricky and Stephen Merchant just sit back and laugh at him.
And I agree that the Office was spot on, and dare I say, even the American remake is pretty good too.
