Well there's 2 alternatives.

Alternative 1. Take the iPod back and ask for a decent MP3 player, like a Creative Zen. Apple is teh sucks, and the little white plastic gadgets make you look gay. Not to mention iTunes, even when it works like it's supposed to (it rarely does) is a fugly, useless pain in the ass.

Alternative 2. If you didn't keep your receipt and thus can't complete alternative 1, you can try manually nuking the old QuickTime. Start by whacking the Apple folder in %ProgramFiles% (usually C:\Program Files\ or in case you run a 64 bit OS, C:\Program Files (x86)\).

Next fire up regedit (Start -> Run -> regedit[enter]). Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Apple Computer\ and nuke everything there. Careful so you don't nuke anything else - screwing up your registry leads to untold misery and possibly an OS reinstall.

Next you'll need to clean out the crud left in the Windows Installer configuration (uninstall info etc), so the installer for the new version won't detect it. Download Microsofts Windows Installer Cleanup Utility and follow the instructions included to clean out all Windows Installer Config information about QuickTime and/or iTunes.

Now every trace of QuickTime should be gone and you can try to install the new one.
