Yes, that they made it that far surprised me. too bad they never colonized properly and intergrated with the natives. I am firm in my belief the states and the affairs of Collumbus would have been quite different if the vikings actually cared about that continent. Not that they probably even knew about it.. As a contrast, I think Leif Erikson's expedition was cut off completely from the old world.
Oh and yes, the vikings were 500 years ahead of the spanish :P
