So someone who follows the rules is bad and someone who (potentially) abuses them under the vail of 'spontaneus roleplay' is good?

In the original scenario shown here, the thief stealing the weapon (thus breaking the RoE/LoW) could have been setting up said Guardsman for a gank, unarmed they'd have died fast.

See my point?

I see your point. But this point basically is "I cannot trust my fellow player" if you assume the reason someonme steals your weapon is to gank you.

I think as a community we should be able to trust our fellow players. We should be able to give them the benefit of doubt. We should not assume that if they break rules *, it is done to screw you. We should assume it's done to enhance roleplaying.

Why should we do that? Because we should be able to trust people like you, our GMs, to recruit able roleplayers who break or bend rules (with moderation) not because they want to screw you, but because it may help to create better roleplaying experience.

Also I trust my GMs judgement to war guilds where I can safely assume that their members are trustworthy roleplayers who's actions will improve my RP experience and not make it worse.

*) granted, use your head and this thing called common sense here. If you catch someone ganking and looting every other player around you, then this may not be RP....

Indeed roleplaying a thief can be a little tricky, but it is also very rewarding, you simply have to go about it in the right way. Staying hidden and then stealing and pegging it isn't very fun for either party, just use your imagination and be inventive in your approach.

Why not befriend your target? It gives you an IC excuse to say.. start patting them on the back, shake their hand, anything really (this is touching for stealing purposes, for the record, not molesting purposes...) I find it's best to always emote what you're doing, obviously you don't have to emote '*Steals*', you can be far more subtle.

Perhaps adapt a disguise that would provide opportunities for stealing, maybe pretend to be a tailor, and 'measure' those rich folks for suits, helping yourself to a few coins while you're at it.

Why even limit yourself to the stealing skill? There are lots of artful ways of relieving people of their belongings. Pose as a doorman at taverns, collecting peoples coats/cloaks for them. Try running some scams, fix some table top games and encourage gambling.

These are just a few examples, you really do have to use your imagination to make life as a thief fun for both parties. (And you'll still get a healthy amount of people that will instantly knock you when they notice you taking something *grins*).

Still though, it's great fun when/if you get into the swing of things, and try something other than what you'd typically see people doing in Fel.

unfourtunately 80 percent of people don't play along.
many have been there and tried that. Their tired of people with eyes in the back of their heads or that can see through walls or disguises weather thought up or done with a kit. Tag readers and people who don't like to lose even if it's a few gp.

Course with discussions like this you'll have everyone shouting "I'd play along." etc just like the whole rping with blues debate. atleast 80 percent are lieing flat out and it's those people that make it no fun being a theif.

I think MORE people play along as time goes by. The more experienced people become, the more willing they are to play along.

Besides, people who don't play along are:

A) not worth the effort
B) not really roleplayers

Suddenly, They got a weapon out and bashed me! So, They looked into their backpack and saw they were short a few gold!

Then be more careful who you target. Having played a thief my self I know what you mean. But you can test out how people are likely to react by emoting *Brushes past >name here<* a few times. They might turn around and tell you to back off but if they suddenly know you are a thief just from that then don?t bother with them. How many times do people bump into each other in a busy street after all?
