Assassin or Thief?

I have recently had my thief character, With only around 50 stealing but i've managed to pull off a few steals. It's been kind of fun but very hard to get a steal without getting noticed, And very annoying when you snoop and fail. Now i'm wondering which to go for as I have some soulstones, And I have some character slots to transfer skill over on.

And so I pose questions to you, The roleplaying community.

What are the benefits and the negatives of being a thief?

What are the benefits and the negatives of being a assassin?

Perhaps try both and decide for yourself?

as thief you can steal whenever you want - i.e. you're greedy, hungy, or you're actially stealing stuff for someone else.

As assassin you'd have to find people who want others assassinated. If you just kill people on your own, you might either become some sort of local hero or a serial killer, depending on whom you kill hehehehehe
Also the weird thing about UO assassinations is that people just don't want to stay dead long enough

for the rest, what Raul said....

To have a decent pvp template to be able to kill someone means you have next to no room for hiding and stealth.

A basic warrior has no chance vs a template with any of the talents of necro/chiv or Bushido. In the right hands of course.

An assasin by definition is supposed to kill people.

I have seen or heard of maybe 3 people die in the last 6 years in UO.

Dont think any of them were assasinated.

assassins have very little use other then very rarely in scenarios when some "quest" character is dying other then that what we call assassins are not really anything more then thugs beating people up for pay, as none really gets more then a few scratches at best from being "hit" by a assassin

assassin really is more of a spring board, the assassins does a contract but its the targe tthat gets benefits from it (pity hugs gifts, ubarhealing and so on)

while the assassin sniggers and wanders away with a few coins if lucky

last actual contract i did was someones alt paying me to "assassinate" their main character, for probably the same reason as above

Depends if you're a good roleplayer or not. My two best thieves are fantastic roleplayers, really creative chaps. They have more fun with their con artist thieves then they ever seem to with any combat character. Stealthers these days, and even poisoner ones, are two-a-penny - half of B^F has poison, yknow. It's all useless if you can't fight for toffee and you'll rarely find yourself given decent, proper contracts.

It's impossible to RP an assassin when you can't backstab your opponent without them knowing what's coming at least OOC.

OOC consent can still be acquired via your respective GMs. Many might agree to a "real" assassination with backstabbing. By the time you actually try to do it your target might already be a quivering wreck from paranoia. In other cases, if a GM knows for sure the targeted member is ok with it you might really catch them unaware.

But before we have the board flooded with more (RP-) template threads: Make a herder with cooking and fishing, wander out into this great wild world and see where you end up.

That would be an interesting project Aryala, to take a character , a noob and just RP him spontaneously and see where his skills take him.

I think the character Tim Hunter did that, although this is only an educated guess from the RP i saw. Could be great fun to, i only have a few RP characters so have plenty of room.

My most fun character is a transgendered bard with crossdressing issues.
