RP Questionairre - The Results - Part Seven!

7 - Would you like to see more or less scripted scenarios?

1) You'll hate me for this... Less. ish. Scripted sceanrios that include people (like the Ilshenar pools one) were excellent - they gave us the outline - and let us go and DO things - absolutely brill. And there was 'measuring' during the scenario to know when to move things along. Scripted ones that revolve around one or two people (and big talky ones) scare people away, or cause lack of interest.
Sounds like paradox, but we need to give *enough* info to let people do their own thing!

2) ONLY if they would give me their word that I'd know the time and the place for it, of course I understand that there's the usual problem of non roleplayers going there just in hope to find items to sell on ebay that shouts improper words or general stupidity, so it's best if they keep the event semi-secret. that's sad tho because I'd love non-scripted scenarios but I always risk to lose them because lack of information about them. so I'll settle for scripted scenarios, that while they offer the same advailability to everyone they also offer to creative roleplayers an invaluable source of information and roleplaying hooks.

3) We script our events and it's difficult to do otherwise - but having a plurality of outcomes is important. If you mean do we want to see more scenario all told, yes, that would be grand, and we would be willing to host and contribute to them. Back in the day, we were quite famous for such long and involved scenarios and when the web site is back up, you will be able to see the stories and lore than grew out of that work.

4) Both

5) As I'm not a member of any of the roleplaying guilds I probably won't get to see much of these but I do like scripted scenarios.

6) Depends on if you mean uo or player made. As long as there is a valid reason, and it furthers the quest. I dont mind them. But the non intelligent quest lines are a right pain ( kill just to kill). Also the time sensitive events that run in the am, arent great.

7) - An equal combination of both, scripted one here, not scripted one there

8) I'd like to see none, but hey, if it's what other people want to do, more power to them. I won't participate personally though.
On a side note, there is a difference between a scripted scenario and a plot hook or situation.

9) I would never participate in any scenario if I knew before hand it was scripted.

10) LESS most definetly LESS!!!!!!!!!!!! And less of the elitism "you can't join in because we don't like you and its not in our script"

11) less. See above. I really like the scenario approach. I very much dislike scripted scenarios where protagonasts and even the ending is pre-determined.

12) Any scenerio is good, be that scripted or not. But it has to be all encompassing and not centric to certain players or towns. A lot of RP is centered on the leaders nowadays and everyone else just seem to be treated a props in their little tales.

13) Um, less

14) i think a scripted scenario can be a good beginning - with a few markers along the way that allows the flow of rp to form around it.

15) As far as scripting goes, I don't mind a basic starting point, but hate things that are planned to the Nth degree and don't include random people who might happen along.

16) Sometimes scripted scenarios are needed and are good. More GOOD ones in that case. Random role play is of course to prefeer but perhaps add the situation that EVERYTHING can happen in the scripted scenario. For example if you have a scenario worked out you let the people in the event do things outside the frame so to speak, and you have options worked out in before hand that "if this happens I will do this to get on the right track(s).
Both are good, and both are very well needed.

17) Don't really mind scripted, aslong as its flexible and has open ends

18) I like the organization of the scripted scenarios, but there is a lot to be said for spur of the moment. If I had to choose I would probably say that I prefer scripted.

19) Less where they are scripted to such an extent you may as well of handed out lines for people to follow. Or where a few select know what is going on and everyone else is just following like sheep cause they can't have much impact on what is happening.

20) More, but only if they are only loosely scripted, meaning a basic structure, but few details and no pre-determined, set in stone endings.

21) Hmm.. not sure. Probably.

22) No no no! If you script it, and hand the parts out, it stops being RP. Talk over the bare bones by all means, if it's a major plot, but please please don't script!

23) no scripted is fine ... unscripted is just people winging it good or bad. and can be very good.

24) Less, normally I would say more but recently one scripted scenario hasn't been diffrent from another. Same mainstream guilds, same plots and little room for others.

25) Depends what you mean by scripted. I thought the whole Moongates scenario was terrific, and that was quite heavily planned, although a lot of spontaneous stuff came out of it. I would love to see something like this again.
What people don?t like is predetermined endings. But there?s no reason not to plan the initial stages and give the whole thing a guiding hand as it goes along.

26) Less

27) More!

28) Always prefer less-scripted, or, if scripted, that the script be as invisible as possible.

29) Define Scripts. If ye mean a start,a middle and an end totaly scripted then forget it...aint interested. A scripted start with a desired but not fixed end is good.

30) I've always felt events/scenarios work best when the person or people starting them have a vague script idea to set up the scene, and from there on things progress depending on what the players do. If people don't seem to get anywhere, they can be nudged in a direction by a scripted happening. But the exact outcome need not be decided in advance.

31) I don`t like scripted screnarios much. I gues this type of screnarios don`t left place for spontaneus actions which is most fun usually.

32) Unanswered

33) no one likes scripted events, but having an outline is often a wise idea for big events so if you get stuck you know where to go. ideally if we all played IC 100% of the time and RP was everything there would be no need for scripting, but people pull in stuff from there OOC activities, like equipment, power gamed skills etc which spoil it and mean we need an outline to construct immersive scenarios.

34) Unanswered

35) I dont mind scripted as long as its open enough to deal with most twists that can happen in game.
If i want more, well yes why not

36) More spontaneous roleplay would be nice, but not sure you can do szenarios without some scripting

37) More

38) Less... infact... none at all.

39) Open-ended scenarios with over-arching stories that make room for day to day RP such as the big campaign between Royals and Rebels over Minoc are an excellent example of my preference. Nothing wrong with scripted pieces, but they have to be imaginative and whatnot to make good.

40) more of any kind although their should be some peopel trying to drive them on as theirs nothign worse than a scenario that starts up then dies without being finished

41) more

42) No opinion on this. Scripted scenarios are ok if they give room for others to join in while the scenario is running already instead of just being audience.

43) I'd love to see more scripted scenarios.

44) didn't get the question. If your question is about events with more or less strict scenarios, that doesn't matter to me at all. I've seen fellow roleplayers running both well-planned and improvized events; both were great.

45) More

46) That doesn't matter at all.

47) Maybe more, I really don't know.

48) I wouldn't mind more. Bring 'em on!

49) Probably more. Or do you mean more scripted at the expense of unscripted? Not sure what the difference is. But a scenario like VanQa is superb as its scripted enough to give structure but not so much as to cramp the development of sub-scenarios for those taking part.

50) - A year ago I would have said No. Now I actually think its probably the best way forwards. Have 2 Gms agree a series of plots/battles/etc and let no one know the planning and hang day-to-day role play from it.

51) There?s a considerable difference of opinion about scripting, even about definitions. ******** has persistently been accused of scripting everything, with the implication that nothing happens without being organised and arranged and having a pre-defined path and outcome. In reality, virtually nothing in *********** is planned at all beyond ?There?s an archery contest at 8pm on Thursday? or whatever, and on most days not even that. I have in the past requested that people not disrupt planned events by attacking during them, which is probably where the accusations of scripting arise. This is because being beaten up is what normally causes the most problems, and I don?t like organisers being discouraged by putting a lot of work into something and then seeing it all go horribly wrong and feeling cheated and upset as a result. But otherwise, anything that happens during an event is fine.

As far as scenarios with a detailed background story are concerned, there needs to be a certain amount of scripting, but there should always be allowances made for the inevitable variation that occurs during roleplay. In the normal course of things, I prefer to provide a framework which other people can fill in with whatever they like. Sadly, not many do ? see my point about about spoon feeding. But then part of that is the belief that everything is scripted and people are worried about doing things ?wrong?.

52) Would prefer a scenario that flows spontaneously, not involved enough to be part of a scripted scenario, and besides, aren't those scripted things only for the "in crowd" and the "big leaders"?

53) Yes less, real life isn't planned of course PVP and some scenarios should be planned but it is nice when something unexpected happens

54) Semi-scripted is the word. Sure there needs to be planning for events, especially ones that affect a larger part of the community, but there needs to be room for improvisation. We're roleplaying, not acting.
