I think the main thing that freaked me out in FEAR was the fact that the evilness was portrayed by a little girl. i hate that.

Back in the days of gaming over a modem link, i used to play AvP1 with friends. We'd take it in turns, one was the predator or alien. One was a marine. Starting off, we'd have the lights on, but make them breakable....

So you walking around at the start, no problem, then you go somewhere and its dark.. i mean REAL dark, you cant see anything.. so you turn to night vision. (when you do this, you lose your motion tracker.) so your running around, switch back to the tracker just incase... BEEP BEEP BEEP *dead*.. Sh*t me up sooooo bad..

As for funny, gotta say the monkey island series. My favorite was number 2, LeChucks Revenge - pure gaming genius.

Definitely agree. System Shock and System Shock 2 have to be two of the games with the densest atmosphere ever and I remember there being times when I just couldn't go face Shodan again and left my PC off. Worst experience has to be that a friend of mine had set-up the sounds from SS1 in Windows for startup, etc. and I remember jumping to being welcomed by Shodan ("L..l...look at you hacker ...)

I hope it's good as it borrows from System Shock II.
Looking forward to this coming out, but it also makes me remember BioForge, which I remember had quite a few scary scenes in it too. Not as good as SS of course ...

Ehm, you mean the fact that both game series were designed by Warren Spector doesn't really give it a specific link?

Anyways:
  • Halo 1 and 2 - Any levels where the Flood just takes over. Definitely has a certain AAAAAAAH-effect.
  • Max Payne - Tripping Level - definitely scary, though parts of it were just wrong and punched holes in the atmosphere.
  • Vampire - Bloodlines - The haunted house has to be one of the freakiest things I have ever seen. Classic horror/ghost story elements, but beautifully put into scene.
  • Thief 1 - The haunted Mine still scares the crap out of me with corpses getting up left and right even though you are sure you've not seen anyone, though I think that this may still be residual anticipation fright from when I first played it all those years ago.
  • The "Flashback"-sequel "Fade to Black", though the fear factor came mainly from situations where you just knew you were not going to make it.
  • Shadow of the Comet - Purely for it's Lovecraft-setting

Well,
kind of old but still one of the scariest games I ever played. Aliens for PS1, I remember sitting in the dark, playing a marine, and the motion sensor beeping. Only being able to see what my flash light can illuminate(about a quarter of the screen I think), the beeping going faster, and sudden a shadow in the corner of the screen, spining around to find it, and then from above ......arrrghhhh
I am dead.

Funniest one is also an oldie, can't even remember if it was for the old Sega or Nintendo 8 bit. It was called Caveman games, one of the lead events was something like the discus throw, but the caveman would grab his cave woman by the hair, wallop her with his club and spin her around by the hair and throw. I know very not PC, but even I as a woman found it hillarious.

Glad to see all the love for the old school point-and-click adventure genre!

System Shock 2 and Doom II were the two standout scary games I remember. The funniest games have mostly been mentioned already: Sam & Max, Day of the Tentacle, the Monkey Island series, but my personal favorite will always be the Tex Murphy series (Mean Streets, Martian Memorandum, Under a Killing Moon, Pandora Directive, and Overseer). Great games, they had everything: sci-fi, horror, murder mystery, noir, and tons of laughs!

Phantasmagoria wasn't at all scary but it did have some utterly disgusting death scenes. Trowel in the mouth, anyone?

Excellent commercial :P

"Vampire: Bloodlines Hotel level ( Bloody scary from beginning to end ) " That hotel is reknown among my friends, it is close to perfection.

Doom 3 actually was very scary since it was so dark and the monsters came from absolutely everywhere. No safe corners, no light.. only banging, then the wall is torn town and you have been thrown across the room. I screamed like a 13 year old girl. Same effect with resident evil kind of.

Daggerfall. All the crazy things that could happen.. but those dungeons had some creepy atmosphere. Three things which added to the tension is that I very often got lost in these dungeons, my sounds card freaked out a lot and made strange noises, and I was praying it didn't crash most of the time.
And sometimes Oblivion, especially if I play with all the creepy addon mods to make it more dangerous and darker. I don't use life detection or light spells much.

Some creepy nintendo game I forgot the name of.. Alone in the dark or something perhaps..

I dunno...Phantasmagoria's deaths were grim as it wasn't cartoon violence, they were murders (a magician bumping off his wives), and it was an adventure game made using video so it was all realistic.

The various wide deaths were:

1) Stabbed through the mouth with a trowel
2) Force fed intestines through a funnel until she choked
3) Had her head smashed onto a wine bottle which went through her eye
4) Had her neck broken in a machine that forced her head to turn all the way around

The heroine also met a grim end at the end if you did something wrong. She was chained into a chair with a pendulum blade aimed at her. One mess up and she could be split in half. And then, if she did escape, there was a daemon that could kill her if she was too slow in the maze. This was particularly nasty - it would stab its taloned fingers through her eyes and tear her face in half.
