that Pha..thing sounds pretty tame compared to Manhunt, considering that you were encouraged to perform more violent murders with glass, plastic bags, nail guns, knives..

Manhunt is different though. I bought it for my bf a few christmasses ago so I've seen it in action, so to speak. Phantasmagoria is more like watching a horror movie, except you control parts of it.

Recently started playing "Dreamfall - The Longest Journey" ... sequel to the initial "The Longest Journey" ... the scenes with the snowy landscape and the little girl appearing every now and then are bloody creepy ... but that may just be me. Still in the middle of the game though ...

I think the most disturbing game I played was a point and click adventure called Sanitarium. Basic story is a guy wakes up in a loony bin with no memories and you have to go into his subconscious to find out who he is and what happened.
There's a bit where he goes to some place full of deformed children that is just creepy. Especially the hide and seek game...

The Suffering is pretty creepy, with all the flashbacks to the murders you were imprisoned for, and the voice whispering to you to kill any survivors you come across.

Flash game called Found Lost made me totally crap myself, playing it alone in the dark. Just seeing the loading screen makes me shiver.
Game called Pathologic is really god for scary atmosphere. Problem is that it's seriously broken; the translation is shit (except for the lines of the famous voiceactors) and walking around is like treading treacle. But dammit that game was awesome, incredibly good, weird imagery - you basically play one of three screwed-up characters in a modern but frontier town with deeply mystic superstition which is suffering from an incurable plague. In infected parts of town, there are clouds of the pathogen which are subtly made up of purple skulls, the town atmosphere is incredibly dingy, decayed and scary, when you get infected or hurt, an extremely cool swaying/fainting thing happens (first person game, hard to describe) and when you gain reputation (one of the 5 modified statistics) there's a creepy child's giggle - when you lose rep, a child's cry. Go download the demo, the demo in particular just throws you into the middle of crap, so it's crap as a game game, but just for the atmosphere it's an experience.

Very old game this, but Ecstatica is the first game that really gave me the creeps when I first started playing it.

The most recent would be the Cradle level in Thief 3. It has everything, dark atmosphere, the sound, the storyline (Who would want to go inside a burned down, haunted orphanage?) and the flickering of the lights once something is nearby. Not to mention it's one of the longest missions in the game, which annoyed me to no end because I wanted to get it over with.

I suggest everyone to try it at least once. Its an amazing feeling of relief when you can go back to whacking normal guards in town again afterwards.

Scariest game ever: Ultima Online. Seriously though. With the monster sounds and the blood! Good grief.

I'm just happy I don't play with music anymore. Would jump in my chair all the time.

*nods nods* I haven't finnished it yet though!

Also in Eternal Darkness, it's really fun when you characters go insane, because they are messing with you. Not the characters in the game.

Phantasmagoria gave me nightmares, but I was just 10 when I played it so I don't know if it's really that scary

Oh god yeah. Not really the spookiest bit but it scared the hell out of me when you go into the kitchen and the door you're supposed to enter is locked, and then things starting flying at you. I went and hid back inside the dumb waiter
