The Poste

I've recreated a Poste account (Ye Morning Poste) with the original password so all people who used it before can access it again with that login.

I've started with a post today but regular writers, it's all yours now!

I'll drop in a Lola's Poste Archive thread within a day or so - this will have a load of Lola's old waffle. So you can see that the mad red-head is, infact, incredibley inconsistent.

This also means.. people start sending in their stories/events/letters again!

I'm sure there's been alot of things missed these past few weeks, so send them in and get them printed.
We need your contribution to keep the poste going.

It'd also be good if Poste regulars put their days/availibility down here. Tanya is happy to fill in for any missing days but doesn't want to tread on any toes!

Helen Hearsay is assigned to do Wednesday's poste, although I switched with Tanya's day this week. Tomorrow's Poste might be a bit later than usual, I'll get it done as soon as I can.

I'm also looking for a couple of volunteers to join the Poste team. If my addled brain is correct, we're currently missing people to write the Poste on Tuesdays and Fridays. If you want to have a stab at filling in - please PM me. Contrary to rumours, I don't bite *smiles*

A little piece of constructive criticism:

Since the forum has been wiped, there is potential to recreate the Sosarian Morning Poste in a different environment than the forum here, allowing the writers to expand on their publishing possibilities. It would make sense to set up a simple blog site (using WordPress, or similiar) for this purpose, which allows only select individuals to post news posts, comments, etc. and has the advantage of being able to categorise posts by author, topics, dates, etc. and searching the news posts specifically. Since a site like that automatically archives older posts by date, they are also easier to search and to overview.

Yes, I know there will be reluctuance to move the Sosarian Morning Poste elsewhere, where people might not read it so readily, but that is already the case here. Those who are truly interested in SMP will read it regardless of where it is, and the feeling of reading it will be nicer if it is actually set up and skinned like a newspaper (with an appropriate theme for the blog installation).

Anyways, this is just a thought ... feel free to ignore it, if it is totally out of whack.

Not sure what other people think about this. Personally, I feel that the Poste needs to be where the most people in the RP community are likely to see it - ie on a board or site they visit anyway, rather than in a separate location (because let's face it, we all only have so many sites we visit every day, and are more likely to read items that are somewhere on the site we're already on than bookmark another link and visit that separately).

In the past, that central hub has always been here, hence the Poste was here. Now that these boards have lost their "CoRE" affiliation, that should be even more so; in any case the Poste has long reported on RP from right across the community so no change there.

My gut feeling would be to keep it here and potentially repost it on UO Forums if those do see long term heavy use from the RP community, rather than go to a completely separate blog site. End of the day, layout and skins are just eye candy, personally I think being in a central location is more important.

Just one person's opinion, mind you - would be interested to hear other people's feedback.

if it's free do both!

I would love to see the poste in a real newspaper format.

The Poste is alread copied with each issue to the UOForums so that the rest of not only Europa but all rp and non RP uo comunities can see it.

I think you should continue one here with the ones that stay AND make this bloggy thingy! Or atleast try it out?

Can I just point out, now due to the split in forums. Not only do the poste writers have to check f4g for news, they have f4g, guvadan, uoforums, Coves website, and a handful of other indepandant places.

So ontop of the work put into trawling through boards, we have to actually write the poste, spend time ingame to do interviews/get first hand accounts, take all the criticism and insults that seem to appear on the boards every so often... and we're expected to post it in three different places? In different formats? If it was a case of copy paste.. maybe.. but it couldn't be if it's on a blog type site. It takes long enough to put each edition together as it is.

Although I think it's be nice to see it in a newspaper type format, I don't see anything wrong with how it is currently. I also agree with Seriya it needs to be in a place where it is seen and used. I.E either here (or I guess uoforums now people seem to have moved there). Places that already have the community interested rather than just another bookmark.

Using RSS-feeds (Syndication) and a little tweaking from the Admins, this may actually be easier than thought, showing snippets from the posted articles above a board, etc.

I agree with that sentiment and I am not suggesting you remove the Poste from F4G, but rather than cramming it into the forum environment, give the Poste a possibility to expand and show truly how great it is. I am seeing this more as a RP tool, rather than having to do with the make-up of the forum or anything.

Location is something relative on the web and depending on where you are coming from, the Poste is already not in a very centralised location. With the proper linking, etc. there should be very little difference felt.

Eye-candy again is a matter of preference, but I think that especially in RP-circles it has its merits, same as the stacking of pieces of cloth to make a larger bed in-game, or other items to make a toilet, etc. The main difference is that the blog software by design is far more suited to handle a newspaper than the forum us, considering what functions it offers (i.e. text flowing around pictures, various formating options, snippets (short introduction to an article, linking you to the full article), etc.). and with a proper skin, looking like a real newspaper, it might just a be a nice touch ... and also, since it is already setup, you won't need to pay attention to the format of it.

I guess I should not have used the word criticism, because it really isn't. I have a lot of respect for the Poste writers and the work they do. I apologise if I have caused offense.

The workload, if anything, on a blog-site should be easier, albeit different. It will allow you to post articles individually as you are done with them, rather than waiting for that last bit of info that you want to put into todays edition but is not ready yet, and since it is meant for casual writes as well as professionals, it is really easy to use. It is true that on a blogsite the Poste would be more individual-story-based, rather than edition-based, but I do not see that as a bad thing. You could even have several people working together on the same edition and post their articles individually.

And with the syndication options, you might end up only having to type it once and not copy and paste it anywhere, because the RSS feeds will automatically update the sites they are set-up on.

The Poste is interesting even if it is not submerged in all the other story-threads the community brings with it. If anything, the separate blog-site would give it more importance, rather than turn it into "just another bookmark.

---

I think I will leave it there. I did not mention this idea because I feel that the Poste is bad or poorly done, but mainly to improve on something already good, that might also make your lives easier. I unfortunately don't have the time right now to whip up a quick mock-up of my idea, but there are also far more talented people out there who would know what to do right away.

Keep up the good work.
