Gwen's Diary

(Hello and welcome to Gwen's diary section. Everybody knows the drill with diaries, but when you are new to that: please take all info as ooc info unless you have been there and know of certain things IC.)

29th of June

Quote:
About the Duke: Quiet means tiptoe, Greetings are good.
About Patrolling: Ants, Rose, Gate, South & West
About Sergeant: Ask Rose for Fitting Helmet
The above lines are copied from my notebook so I wont forget, because they could be important while I perform duties as a Guard for Trinsic. Yes ! I started Guard duties today. For a while now I have been pondering what I can do in the service of Trinsic while most of the elves have retreated to other places. From what I am told of all the places Trinsic has been the most welcome to my people and has always showed us kindness and respect. And with all that goes on why not offer my services there where it is mostly needed?

People respond all different. Some are upset, others are surprised and are questioning my sanity. Most say it is the worst job ever and there are those who try to convince me to go do something else. I wonder if there is someone out there who understands. I am someone who likes to keep busy. Even as a child when we were still living in Heartwood I was always helping others when I was done with my own tasks. With few elves to watch over and with business quiet in the Rose I have spare time and just as when I was a child I rather use that time to help out. As a Guard.

Not to mention: I miss my people, keeping myself busy will not only be usefull for the Duchy ( I hope) it will also let me be amongst people so I won’t feel as lonely as I sometimes do lately.

I think it will take a while before people are going to take me serious. Captain Kaelyn told Hildy that I am not to be ordered around too much. I do not seek special treatment when I am in their uniform, but I also didn’t want to show lack of gratitude by pointing that out to the Captain.

As discussed during my last visit to Eska’eldalie I have permission to join the Duchy Guards in all their duties. I had hoped it wouldn’t happen this fast, but this also meant raising my bow against Kaldor while I am on duty. Hopefully this will not damage the relationship with Kaldor, but to be honest I think it is impossible to avoid that. No matter how nice the Lady VanQa has been to them all those years, most of them (Not all !) have seem to forgotten this when she left. Or they are all new Kaldorians and the old ones have left. (or does Devante have too much influence on me?) Like I said to my superior in Eska’eldalie: I will continue to show them respect, I will continue to show them the kindness they are used to from the elves, but I will also do my duty for Trinsic. It is after all home to the Elven Quarter and thus my home.

Aside from troubles with Kaldorians and aside from the group of odd people that visited town (Such as colorfull dressed men calling themselves witches and calling me weird for pointing out to them witches are females and warlocks are males) I guess my first night on duty as a Duchy Guard went well.

Gwen sat up in the middle of the night, gasping for breath. The figure besides her moved. Good, she had not awakened him. As her eyes accepted the darkness of the night, she let herself slide out of the bed, walking to a window that allowed her to watch over Trinsic. Stars were shining comfortable in the nightly sky, the moon their brilliant huge companion. Why would the nightmares not go away? Why was she not strong enough to face her fears properly without wanting to shut her eyes for them and hope that it would all be over soon?
It is your desire to not fail the Lady Durinka that chosen you to replace her sister, that makes you worry too much. To Alar she could not keep secrets like she had done to all others around her. Such had been the wish and will of her parents and the elders of her birthland. You are gifted with this, there must be a reason and this will become known to you in time.
Then the voice of her father echoed in her mind: it is because you want to live. You are young, your heart is full, and… She could almost feel her father caressing her cheek, giving her a pained look that only a parent can give his child when he wishes to take away her pain. Come back to me and to your mother…
Gwen shook her head and turned around to glance over to the bed. She took a deep breath and walked back, sliding back in. He stirred and his arm was wrapped around her waist, pulling her close to him.
Before falling asleep again she could hear the comforting words of her mentor. I will keep an eye on you o’nessa.

Gwen sat on a chair in the Elven Infirmary besides Herenui. Earlier the woman had menaged to cut off her own hand. There had been blood all over the floor and Gwen had been covered with it. She could still feel the warmth of it on her hands. Blood. Death. So much of it lately. It seemed everywhere. Constantly reminding, constantly putting her in a state where she had troubles thinking straight. She sighed and rested her book on her lap to glance over to Herenui. She was sleeping rather restless. What a shame I am not a professional healer. Maybe I could have saved the hand… Gwen sighed again, her eyes still on Herenui but slowly closing, feeling her own weariness.

“Control freak !!!” Jern shouted in her dream as he had done earlier in the evening. He looked over at Alar who was calmly seated at the other end of the bar. Stop it ! she wanted to say, but she couldn’t. She couldn’t say anything. You are wrong, Jern, stop it. But the words wouldn’t come. “You must tell, Gwen.” Sagittarius put a hand on her shoulder, reassuring. I want to but I can’t. Again the words wouldn’t come. And she knew why they wouldn’t come. She didn’t even know the entire story, so how could she ever really explain? She only knew a part of it. The part that lived with her every day. The dreams and a gift that terrified her.
“You must die!” She turned around in her dream and saw the elven undead come at her. Frozen with fear the child Gwen only stood there looking in horror at the sight in front of her. She could see…

With a gasp Gwen awoke trembling. Besides her Herenui moaned softly in her restless sleep.

Gwen closed her traveling bag. She was ready to go. Once more she looked around, sighed a little. The time off would be wonderfull. Away from the deaths and the other recent stress she had been going through. As she softly closed the door behind her to not awaken those who were still asleep inside, a squirrel happily came to greet her. “Ah, I should have known we’d have someone around to guard our steps.” She patted the little creature. “Let’s go, Khila.”

Gwen looked around in the Tavern, nodding to Belana the waitress with a smile. It was good to be back and she looked forward to working this evening and seeing the friends she made here again. The holiday with the sisters had been quite an experience. Laughter, talks, long walks, the sisters shared everything together and had included Gwen as if she had been one of their own sisters. At the beginning of the week VanQa had kept a safe distance though from Gwen and Gwen had politely done the same.
The big change in attitude from the Lady VanQa came when Gwen found her sitting outside the Inn at the edge of Lake Ilshen. Her shoulders had been shaking and for a moment Gwen doubted if she should walk away and let the elf shred her tears alone. Or maybe she should warn her sisters. But then she felt compassionate and sat down besides VanQa quietly.
A little while later they started talking and Gwen discovered that Miguen had left VanQa because he was unable to live with her ungoing suffering each time he looked at her face. It was truly a sad thing, but Gwen understood why she hadn’t told her sisters yet. She didn’t want to ruin her sisters vacation. And so it was that Gwen had a relaxed week off, made a starting friendship with the Lady VanQa.
But she was glad to be back in the Quarter now and eager to meet those she had missed dearly.

I count myself very lucky to have befriended so many wonderfull people here in Trinsic and the Elven Quarter, especially the ones like Stewan. When he left last night, after we had spoken for a long while at the new trees of Triel about several matters such as the books we had found, Tobias and Kelirahc, he had given me some very important matters to consider. My mind must have been somewhat clouded by all the things that have happened lately and by my still growing feelings for Kelirahc to see before the disrespect that Stewan sees in actions and words from him. But I can see clearly now what Stewan meant, when he explained how others might perceive things. Alar seemed unsure about it, but I myself am certain that Kelirahc will understand…

The seas surrounding Trinsic are safe once more, trading by sea will return to normal.

Letting her fingers glide over the simple and somewhat crude drawing she made, Gwen sighed when her fingers halted over a certain person on the drawing. Suddenly she closed her diary and put it away, looked for more paper to write a letter to Eska'eldalie.

How can it be this matter with the Kaldorians is not solved yet? Why do the Kaldorian leaders not take action after the Trinsic Council has sought to talk with them and come to an understanding that would satisfy both ends? Is it really true that they do not want too? When will someone explain to me exactly what has occurred and why there is so much reluctance to find a peacefull way of ending this ridicilous feud? Once again these questions crossed my mind as I watched the road blockade that Hugo and Corwin had build. I felt also greatly disappointed. I had expected such from the likes of Hugo, knowing he is one of the Kaldorians that means no harm with such, but I had not ever dreamt that an honorable Kaldorian like Corwin would do something like that. As far as I know the ban has not been lifted and it felt to me as if Corwin was attempting to provoke hostility. Of course my choice of words offended him. Why can he not get it through his thick skull I was not insulting Kaldor or him, but disagreeing greatly with the course of action of making a road blockade just to show the people Kaldor is still present? What is the true meaning behind showing it the way they did. Couldn’t they have just said “Hi” instead ? I still hold Kaldor in the highest regards as I have heard only good about them, but in the past year it seems many of these people have changed into the complete opposite then how they have been perceived in the past. I truly hope it is just some sort of phase and that matters will return to normal. And I also wish Devante would not voice his opinion of them so loudly… they will tire of it one day and I worry they may harm him to prove their point.
