I would rather play UO than........

Ok so i've been thinking, I'm pretty addicted to UO. Im not gonna pretend otherwise. I sit at work thinking about things I need to do on UO that evening or things I can do to busy myself. Sometimes I cancel plans IRL with friends and tell them "I've got work to do" just so I can stay home and chase gains. It getting to a stage where I dream about UO. Im being chased by Kaladorians and Daemons. My girlfriend is starting to suspect me of having an internet girlfriend as im on here so much.

I realised that I log an average of 30-40hrs a week on UO and that I would rather play UO than do a great many things. So I was thinking/HOPING that I can't be the only person with this "problem," and I'm starting this thread to find out who else shares my affliction and to what extent. So the thread

"I would rather play UO than" was born

Please if there are others like me out there I need to know.

If there isn't I will start to get worried :P

I think everyone when first playing any game get 'addicted' for a while.

I know I have been chased in my dreams by UO deamonswhen I first began :P but it did wear off
I still play most days though but thats because I can please myself what I do.
*grins*
Im sure you will begin to take up your interest in other things again soon enough.

I think Tabbitha is right about it wearing off after a while. Though it can get worse. I'm pretty sure there are uo players who have this turn in to a problem when it starts to seriously effect their real lives. I'd say you should try to avoid uo 'usurping' more then just your free time.

One way to appease your girlfriend is to get her hooked on uo too ^_^

When I first started playing I was as bad as that. When I first joined KT about 5 years ago or so I actually quit university so I could spend all my time having fun in UO, that and I hated the course.

I remember when my char had a IG girlfriend and I told my RL girlfriend....didnt go down too well, at the time I couldnt see what the problem was hehe.

I still blow her off if I have arranged something on UO or there is a cool event going on. "Hun I cant go out tonight ive got a guild meeting...." thinking about it I am suprised I still have a girlfriend.

When I discover a new role playing game, and I like it, I usually go bananas for a couple of weeks. But it blows over after a while.. Either gf gets too annoyed or there is too much work to be done. But when I had neither, I used all my time for gaming in general.
IMHO:
As you probably figured out, everyone needs something else to do too, basicly anything besides a computer (work doesn't count ). Either you ruin the game for yourself, or the game(s) ruin you. Luckily, it's mostly the games taking the casualty rather than the players.
WoW not taken into consideration

30-40 hours per week is probably excessive.

Depends though.

I am surprised your gf puts up with it.

If you have plenty of free time and no commitments or worries and it makes you happy then why not? But you do have to keep yourself grounded in rl as well otherwise you may end up losing out. In fact you will.

Keep UO as a hobby not a full-time job =)

Ohhh I had quite a serious addiction to UO (been playing over seven years now...so...) - dreaming about it, walking down the road irl and seeing a rock in the road I actually paused and thought mining it might yeild some valorite (I kid thee not), etc etc. When it hits the point when your partner comes home on break to see you from work, and you find you *can't* leave the screen to kiss him goodbye again because you HAVE to do YOUR bit of an event right now this very second - then it's time to turn the game the hell OFF and re-evaluate things seriously. I think it's also imperative to have at least one alt that is very very unlike you personality-wise, that the circle of rpers you usually franternise with don't associate with 'being' you, so that you can log into the game and just play for playing's sake instead of plaing a char that a load of people 'depend' on for one thing or another, because once that's happened you'll find you log in not for YOU anymore, but because 12 other people are relying on you being there just so they can play - and when you can't be there you feel guilty, and then get verbal abuse and emotionally blackmailed over icq for the next week. Maybe that's mainly a GM thing, but I think once your char has any sphere of influence at all, the danger of it hapening is there. It's funny...no matter how many times (at the time) that I tried to drum it into friends and guildmembers that "real life comes first" - it wasn't until the night I *couldn't* kiss Riv bye-bye because my char's name had just been called to (how earthshatteringly important!) recite a poem in some event I was bored to tears at ANYHOW, that I realised I wasn't even taking my own damned advice.

Don't believe Henry. He is just as much of an Addict, and I should know it, I live with him. He is the founder of UOAA . I mean he even met me and married me after meeting me in UO. Personally I don't mind him being a UOAA, cause I used to be one too, I used to make up doctor appointments and such to make it to UO events, when I lived on EST time zone. Now I got a "Dawn of War" Addiction and "Sims2"Addiction, when you see bubbles about peoples head when they talk to you and you hear sim speech you got a problem.
The Key is to get your girlfriend involved in the game, get her to try the game, Hell I will even put in some UO gold if you want to buy her a nice house to obsses about decorating. And you can have UO date nights, use the upcoming PUB nights as a nice location to get her into the game.

You know I actually think I like the idea of UOAA A place that welcomes everyone and judges no one. Sounds perfect. Well when over 10,000 people put their religion as "Jedi" on the national cencus it got recognised as a religion :P maybe if enough of us rally up we could do the same for UO addicts. Maybe even start a recovery foundation to wein people off, cold turkey could never work I tried :P

Or maybe just log off at 12am at nights instead of staying on till 2am checking through chests and putting stuff tidy in my house :P

Ha Ha Ha Boss, your secrets are all out there now :P

Holy hell, I've just read back over what i've just written, I SERIOUSLY NEED HELP :S
