PC Problems

All - my home PC is still working, but it's making some worrying sounds so if I suddenly disappear, that's why. I think one of the internal fans may be the problem.
The PC is about 2 and a half years old so could probably do with replacing at any rate. Anyone recommend a new one? And what's the best way to get the stuff off the old one and on to a new machine?

You know I will take you up on that as my PC is past its sell-by and will probably struggle a bit with KR when it comes (let alone other games). Having said that, I opened it up and the problem seems to be the power supply. PC boots and everything but the fan is rattling like a bastard (processor fan is fine) and I don't trust it not to die in spectacular fashion and screw everything else up. So I'm seeing if the last PC repair guy I used is available to come fit a new one, at least as a short term measure. I'd do it myself but I wouldn't know where to plug all those little cables - they scare me!

I got a guy coming round tonight a 7 so I might even be online in time for this evening. Hopefully!
I'll have a proper chat with Jeppers regarding what I want for a new one, if he's happy to do it. Providing my old one gets up and running tonight there won't be a rush - I'm on holiday in July so he could do it then, really.
One thing I'll need is all the old stuff moved to the new machine.

Moving stuff is a pain - you can use Norton Ghost to literally copy an entire disk image from one HD to another then place that HD inside new machine.

Having said that I have never succesfully managed to do this =/

Best bet is to think about what you really want on your shiny new PC and reinstall those programmes from scratch and simply port any data files over using usb2 stick or cd rom.

If you need any software disks for reinstalling pm/icq me im sure i can dig out some stuff for you =)

heh - of course im being an idiot - if youe current hd is ok and has space in it you can just stick it in your new machine perhaps as a second HD or even primary HD - you just need to install drivers in windows [whcih could be fiddly] - i recommend having your curent hd as a secondary hd in your new pc

That's the most straightforward thing but then I'm thinking about whether I'd want Vista and whatnot. I do have a network though so isn't it possible to dump stuff on a network drive and transfer that way?

Depends

Some/Most software is registered in the system registry so will need to be re-installed - data can be chugged across a network easily =)

tbh the only issue you will have realy...is when you get a new computer,...whether the motherboard will have enough slots for the old harddrive.....I had a problem fitting my old ones in so I had no choice but to get a new one. Transfering date just wont be an issue if your motherboard will take enough sltos for hardrives and disk drives.

Applications won't transfer over a network easily because of registry entries for settings and registration - they aren't copied with the files. As for data, Callum's right.

And yes I am happy to do that Also with regards to the psu, they're about £15+VAT plus whatever labour he charges so shouldn't be an issue.

Keeping hard drives is a good idea, but if it's IDE you will struggle to connect it as most PCs now only have one IDE channel (which would usually be connected to the optical drive)

Just had a call from Cal - the fan's knackered on her CPU so the guy's taken the fan to get the right one. So you nubs will have to do without her tonight.
