God I hate know-it-alls!

The following is a dramatisation - any resemblance to real or imaginary people, living or dead, is entirely coincidental. Events have been altered somewhat to protect the innocent.

Quote:
Tech: Hello, information services how may I help you?
User: Uh yeah, explorer won't like open PDF files and stuff.
Tech: Oh that's a common problem, hang on and I'll guide you through fixing it. Now, from within explorer, select "Folder Options" from the "Tools" Menu. Let me know when you've found it.
User: Ooh I see! *frantic clicking* Yeah it asks me if I'm sure I want to format the disk, something about all data will be lost and stuff.
Tech: Really... Please press "No". Now close any open dialogs except Explorer, and we'll try again. Select "Folder Options" from the "Tools" menu.
User: OK, done.
Tech: Great! Now, select the "File Types" tab...
User: Uhuh *more frantic clicking* Aight it says that removing these extensions means I can't like open files anymore. Should I say "Yes"?
Tech: NOOO! Press "No". Now, please, don't click anything...
User: Oh, I clicked "Yes". Is that bad?
Tech: *has an aneurysm*
If I had my way, techs should be allowed to shoot users like that.
Or at least seriously maim them.

ah and there you have the reason why i will never (hopefully) work in tech support again - well that and i hate users

the crap support company at our place wouldn't have got that far though, heh they have the command prompt disabled by default on all new PC's, a sensible enough approach to minimising the damage users can attempt to force on a system.

except that various programs that i'm using/creating require the command prompt to be active. so i phone up and ask for it to be activated - 3 days later and 10 phones calls and i give up - one search on google and a small abuse of local admin rights (which i'm not technically supposed to have but the bloke that installed the PC didn't know that ) later and i fix it myself

I had a lecturer come up to me the other day and ask

"I have a student who keeps printing out his work when he has finished. Is there any way of stopping him?"

Well clueless users I can deal with - it's the smug bastards who refuse to listen to what I say and just go rampaging off on their own instead of doing what I tell them to do that need whipping. Fortunately I don't do much support, and since we're tier 2, we have a helpdesk to take care of the worst idiots.

I almost took a job in tech support earlier this month. Glad I didn't!
Still, when I worked on games magazines we used to have all sorts of fun with readers who couldn't get the cover disks to work...
One couldn't work out why her PC 3.5 floppy wouldn't work in her Amstrad PCW.
One actually folded a 5.25 floppy in half to get it into the 3.5 disk drive. And one cut open a 5.25 floppy to get the floppy inside, again to try and insert it into the 3.5 drive.
Some people shouldn't be allowed PCs!

On PC Review, yeah. We were just phasing them out the first couple of months I was there. We had our first CD covermount in 94 but still had the floppies until the magazine was sold to Future.
PC Gaming World (launched in 96) always had a CD covermount, no floppies.

It's more fun when they start to ask you about why the lift has broken down, or why the air conditioning is spewing out noxious gases, or even marriage guidance.
