So I went to get a new lead-acid battery pack for my UPS. Damn thing started complaining, pfft. Turns out, a new battery pack for an old offline APC UPS costs twice as much as a new line-switching UPS! Oh and a word of advice, lead is heavy.

You might want to drain the sulphuric acid from them before you build your bomb-shelter out of old lead batteries though. Would suck to survive nuclear holocaust only to be boiled in acid immediately afterwards.

Well I found out why it was cheap... Apparently "line switching" is Taiwanese for "makes loud humming noise and emits white smoke". Something burst in there as well - from the smell I'd say it was a capacitor, but it's a tad too hot yet so I'll leave the postmortem for tomorrow (and the UPS on the porch).
