Semi-short OS review: Windows Vista

Got hold of a license at work - for testing purposes. So I upgraded my gaming rig after some initial research indicated that my hardware and software/games were all pretty well supported. The upgrade from XP Pro to Vista Business went rather smoothly, complained about daemon tools and the webcam drivers (lazy logitech!) but nothing went disastrously wrong. Which kinda disappointed me.

On the plus side, Vista looks great (with Aero Glas), feels snappy and responsive, hasn't crashed yet, and runs all my games. But damn it's a resource hog! Forget about installing this thing if you have less than 2G of RAM. And the damned warnings are getting on my nerves. You'd be hard pressed to find anything to click on that wouldn't prompt a barrage of security warnings (none of which can be disabled, damnit!)

We'll see how it turns out, beside the warnings it's at least not worse than XP. And I am a sucker for eyecandy.

err unless you've bought a new PC i doubt there's much point - as futt points out the requirements are quite high

personally i'm waiting fro service pack 1 before i bother, well that and the fact i'm not quite sure which version i'd *need* there seems to be far too much choice. least with XP its obvious i want the Pro version

oh and have you run into any fun situations with the built in DRM crap? i hear so much about it but i can't seem to see how it actually affects the running of the OS - tried playing any torrented films etc?

Well you can lower the reqs a bit by not using Aero. And I haven't noticed any DRM, WMP runs my erm "pre-ordered" movies and music just fine, VLC works, DivX and Xvid codecs install without a hitch so.. Only problem is Daemon Tools, Vista doesn't seem to like the virtual SCSI CD-ROM driver it installs. But I haven't really looked into it yet, could be an easy solution to that.

ok then so other than the eye candy - what benefit does it give over XP pro?

Well disregarding UI changes, it's more evolutionary than revolutionary really. The new security model looks promising, and should prevent a lot of malware/virus infestations (even the Starforce DRM Malware won't work on vista heh). They seem to have done some work on the network stack, though the effects of that aren't immediately obvious. They ditched WinFS, which kindof sucks. Some UI changes and new utilities (like the game browser, yay). Gadgets are cool. DirectX 10, dunno if that will be backported to XP but I kindof doubt it. Still haven't read up on all the changes so I might be missing a few things.

so what you're saying is "it's nice but don't rush down to PC world to get a copy"

fair enough i can wait - not like there are games/programs that require it yet

If you're on about the popups whenever you try to run a program etc, you should be able to disable them, or at least you could in RC1.

That's a good summary yes. For us gamers, the turning point may be when new titles start requiring DirectX 10, since I kinda doubt it will be backported to XP. Still that will probably be quite a bit into the future.

If I had a Mac I'd buy their new OS, maybe their new computer as well. With their two double core thingy. But it might cost more then an upgrade to vista. Although I heard it wouldn't cost that much, new tech costs tho :P

  • Start Menu
  • Type "Local Security Policy" into the search bar there
  • Accept the prompt about elevation
  • Go Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options
  • Can disable the UAC bit by bit in there.

Failing that, you can disable the whole thing easily by going to Control Panel and typing "UAC" into the top right search bar ->
