It is just sensible in the cold weather to wear a nice wooly bobble hat. Nothing worse than bright red ears. I actually got a headache once from my head freezing. I stupidly went out with out my hat when it was -10 centigrade outside. Never going to do that again.....

Harr, wimp! When I was young and served in the army, I was stationed near Lillehammer (former host to the Olympic winter games!). Temperatures regularly crept down to or below the -30C mark. But I didn't need no steenkin' hat!

Aye the joy of being male. You have naturally more muscle than me. I have more body fat, therefore lose heat quicker. Come feel my lovely icy feet.......

Muhahahha.....

I used to have more muscle when I did martial arts and never needed a hat. Weird how muscle keeps you warm rather than fat, I mean you would think it would be the other way round? Mind you I guess it depends on how much fat. I am not overweight, which is a good thing. I did read once about this fat guy and his friends who fell in an icy cold river years back. He survived because of all his blubber, his slender friends froze to death.....

I saw some female body builders are getting implants as they lost their breast fat through weight lifting! Looks really.... weird....

Fat is a much better insulator than muscle! But that is a moot point anyway, since we have a lot of neurons and blood vessels in the outer layers of our skin (as opposed to polar bears, seals, walruses and other animals who use body fat for insulation). However, females have a lower average body temp than men - except when ovulating.

I saw this program about heat loss awhile back, they were making people stand out in their undies in the freezing cold (About -12 centigrade) and used a thermograph to measure heat loss.

They showed that people with more muscle mass lose heat slower than those with less muscle mass. A normal average female lost heat quicker compared to a normal average man, but the female bodybuilder lost heat slower than both of them because of her muscle mass.... or maybe she just had higher testosterone levels? Apparently muscle does slow down heat loss. No idea why though.

He also said it is a misconception about fat, but I don't think so. I mean most animals who live in the artic are blubbery, but then blubber is a certain type of fat. Maybe we humans don't have that certain blubbery fat. I am not a biologist so have absolutely no idea, maybe there is someone who is hot on biology who can enlighten us.

heh. I found this. Quite interesting. Seems that women feel the cold more than men, but does not mean that they are more likely to get hypothermia quicker. I also read an article that women are more sensitive in general to touch, pain etc etc...... bizarre!

Two reasons: The more muscle mass someone has, the more muscle they have to shiver with, which creates warmth.
Secondly: Muscle contains a lot of blood vessels and thus has a good circulation. Fat doesn't contain many blood vessels to the more fat someone has between their muscle and their skin, the colder their skin gets. So whilst a lot of body fat might be good for keeping internal organs warm in arctic conditions, it's better to be leaner in most countries, where you're exposed to cold for only short amounts of time (waiting for the bus etc).
