Ok now i really could use some advice

We got a computer built for us by my partners brother which is all good and fine and we are off the lag master that we were forced to use for the last couple of weeks. We are having a problem with it though the graphics card keeps over heating everytime we start up WoW it jumps from 59 which is still probaly too high to something between 85-91 then off course we get the warning pop up. We have made sure we have the latest drivers then we tried some older drivers we tried cleaning up all teh crap that was stuck in the fans and weve taken the side off and even switched off the radiator in the room nothing has worked so far so does anyone have any suggestions of other things we could try?

How's the fan? What graphics settings are you playing WoW on? You sure it's compatible (unlikely that it isn't to be fair) WoW usually isn't that hard on gfx cards... well, not THAT hard.

if you have an ati card, then it's waaaay too hot. nvidia tends to get a bit hotter. Anyhow, WoW should not put so much stress on the video card to make it heat up like that.

Could be that the fan of the video card is loose and not transporting off the heat efficiently anymore.

Could be that you have an unlucky placement of fans inside the case of your PC. i.e. one fan transports the hot air from some other place (CPU, HDD) to your video card, thus heating it up even more. It's not that uncommon to see bad air flow with self build PCs - if you have one of those. Rearranging HDDs, (re)moving or adding some additional fans in your case, getting a CPU fan that blows in a different direction, may all help in this case.

Could be that something else on the card is broken. Those things are complex pieces of electronics and I've seen some real weird stuff. Just make sure you test for everything else before dumping your video card.

Finally, get some other complex 3D games (titan quest, oblivion... even sims2 works) to see if you get similar temperature levels.

Have you tried giving the ocmputer a good wash?

Throw some cold water over it when it starts to overheat

That's a point, why are you asking for technical advice at Ozle's?

Didn't there use to be an "ask-a-nerd" forum here?

Oh and grab one of the ATI overclocking utilities out there, and check the GPU clock frequency. If it's running hot even with sufficient cooling, you may have to reduce the clock speed.

Yes and the GPU core operates at a set frequency. If this frequency is higher than what the gfx adapter was designed for, the GPU will run unusually hot and crash. Lowering the GPU's operating frequency (or clock) will slow the GPU down somewhat, but also reduce the heat it generates.

That is, provided the cooling is sufficient. Check the fan speed. Also check the temperature inside the case - the GPU fan will not work properly if it's just displacing hot air, it needs cool air from the outside. Another point to consider is the cooling paste used between the GPU heat sink and the GPU itself. Some manufacturers have a habit of applying way too much cooling paste, which will actually impede the transfer of heat from the GPU to the heatsink.

Remove the heatsink, lightly wipe the GPU and the heatsink with a piece of antistatic cloth until there is only a barely visible film of coolingpaste left on either one, then firmly reseat the heatsink.

As a last resort, you can buy separate cooling fans that will fit in a PCI slot underneath the display adapter, venting hot air directly outside the case.

I use to be able to run WoW without a graphics card and it was fine, Than again I do have 1Gb Ram.

But now i've got a graphics card it's still fine.
