I can play dvds on this old pc but the sound is kind of wobbly and sounds like its being played almost underwater?

- the dvd plays fine elsewhere

- the soundcard is not faulty

- the connections are all ok

- it plays audio cds without a wobble

Im guessing its the mobo being too slow to handle the graphics which is interfering with the soundcard output?

What do you think?

Hmm..

The DVD probably has AC3 encoded audio - without an AC3 decoder you'll only get the center speaker or distorted audio or somesuch.

Go get AC3 Filter - it's a free AC3 codec.

Also, try the Videolan Client - plays DVDs and other media nicely without external codec packs and stuff.

AC3 Filter has a control panel section where you can tune your speaker setup and stuff too - could check that and see if it matches your configuration.

Which sound card do you have? I remember with my current SB card there was a driver conflict with something that the install disk snuck onto my hard drive... I'd suggest going to the manufacturers website, look on thier tch support (or prefferably forums - they seem handier) looking for conflicts... it was a file that didn't apparently do anything that made my sound go all under-watery.

Or corrupt codecs might also provide you with scary audio, try downloading a new codec pack

Actually - stay away from codec packs, they have a tendency to install all sorts of cruft and ultimately thrash your windows install. I usually just grab the DivX, XVid and AC3 codecs, and use VLC for DVDs.

I'll have you know, It may have been a inbuilt graphics card which are always rubbish. But your not the one who's in my position, And I Know for fact that I was running World Of Warcraft without a seperate graphics card. So tbh Sally, You can just shoo off!

I seriously believe that you now have no right what-so-ever to go reporting posts for feeling offended.


As regards to the question in hand, I can't honestly think of anything different to say than what Futt has suggested. Switching to VideoLAN quite a while ago sorted out problems I had playing pretty much any videos where the sound went whack in Windows Media Player.
