A colleague of mine at work has a weird problem with his monitor

All of a sudden today, a big fat purple line appeared down the middle of it.
Any ideas on what to do anyone?

It just needs a good degaussing. Put a big magnet in front of it and pour some iron filings into the air holes at the top, then switch it on and off a couple of times. Don't mind the sparks and smoke, that's normal, it's the residual magnetism flying off.

Well we didn't have any iron filings around, so we just scraped the top off a crusty pie into it. Is that the problem?

It seems alright for now. We poured some vodka onto the fire to put it out.

If the top of your banoffee pie was crusty, there was something wrong with it. No wonder it didn't make the monitor work.
Next time, try chocolate vermicelli or hundreds and thousands.

Now that would explain it. Maybe you could try putting the rest in the CD drive to check if it is still readable.
