Play cole up front and contiune shoe horning 11 players in no matter if the teams balanced.

Heskey plays well with Owen, Owens our best chance of qualifying, seems a logical pick really.

Whether we're good enough to win in other areas is debatable but there isn't a better partnership out there up front available.

The Owen-Heskey partnership was 3 years ago!
Its time for new people to step up to the plate. Why pick a player now that if we qualify probably wont be picked for the championship.

Well if you were looking for a big man to play up there with Owen, id probably pick Johnson. If thats not what McClaren wants, then Defoe. Both are proven premiership goalscorers, and Defoe has a much better game to goal ratio than Heskey.
Yes I know Heskey sets up more goals than he scores, but if we're looking for someone like that ratherthan a striker then that opens even more options!

And in Heskey's place I would take one of the young lads who have been playing with the U21's.
Agbonlahore, Derbyshire, Lita, etc..... Surely if experience is so vital, lets get one of them in the squad so they can gain a little bit (even if they dont play)

Defoe, Johnson are both pace men and while you can argue thier are better players is again shoe horning players in, Owens never played well without someone to do his dirty work for him.

Agbonlahore, Derbyshire, Lita and walcott should have played them in the friendlys. Qualifiers we have to win and none of them have even proved they're premiership class let alone international.

Oh and to ram home the point Gerard isn't a holding/defensive midfielder and never has been he's played more games at right back for Liverpool than he ever did there which is my point kinda fitting players into postions instead of picking a team.

Heskey also hasnt proved his premiership class for several years, he has scored what, 1 goal this year? (Same as Agbon and Derby)
Sure he may have done well for Liverpool 3+ years ago, but his time has gone.

Basically McClaren has no idea what he is doing and left himself stuck in a corner with only one out it seems, Heskey. Sure we are limited at the moment, but we shouldnt be in this position...

Heskey is premiership class all be it at around the mid to lower level of it. the thing is the other names suggested here havent even proved they are that good.

I wouldnt even bother with Owen. He has been out injured far too long and needs to prove his fitness and form before he is even considered. To throw him straight back into the team is more of a liability than playing defoe and Johnson.
