Short story: MediaDefender is a bunch of evil people poisoning filesharing networks with garbage data and logging IPs to sue people for sharing stuff. The manager is a bit of a muppet - he forwards all his confidential company mail to his GMail account.

Then he proceeds to register with a dodgy torrent site's forum. With his gmail address as his contact email. Using the same password for the forum account that he did for his GMail account. Moderator/admin logs in, downloads all his mail, and posts it in a torrent.

Hilarity ensues as the contents of the emails are... well incriminating to say the least.

Hang on, think I have found a major flaw in their plan. If you go to download the simpsons movie but use one of their torrents and get junk how can they sue you for downloading the simpsons movie as you havent.

Wouldnt it just make more sense to get permissions from the movie studios to download stuff, then go to torrent sites, download things and then nab the people your torrent client connects to. Granted some torrent clients will mask ip's and easy to get round it with a proxy but to the average downloader thats far too much hard work so they could easily get a few million people.

Well I think the entrapment operations were separate from their poisoned torrents. Unfortunately for them though, entrapment is frowned upon in the courts so it wouldn't have sticked. Which is why they publicly denied doing it, but admitted to it and laughed about it in internal emails. Good thing nobody saw those emails!
