It manages to combine being extremely beautiful with equal amounts of agonising tedium.

The game is essentially a social-construct. In this it is akin to what I ever did on Uo so I suspect if I could get into it I would find it enjoyable.

Unfortunately (in a similar way to Uo) the gameplay is weak. Combat with npc pirates is simplistic meanwhile combat with other players seems very pre-determined based on learned skills and ship capability. Mining and trading is a rather soul destroying monotony. The whole skills system makes progress so slow that unless your in it for the long haul any progress is going to be severely limited. Simply travelling through half a dozen shipments starts to become annoying as you realise just how much time is spent accomplishing very little.

The above points are valid, but I still enjoy it. There are *always* people around, cant rememebr the last time I saw the server population under 20,000 on at any one time. I believe the record is about 43,000 on at once. And this is all the one 'world', no sharding like UO. And it's for every country (apart from China, they have their own server), so it's 23/7 (there's an hour downtime about 11-12 gmt every day).

Miniung is dull cbut can be done afk as long as you're in a safe system/keep an eye on things and warp out if it gets hot. Best way to make money is to do missions. You can rake in about 100k isk a mission even fairly early on.

The skill building is all done in realtime even when you're not logged on. You select a skill and it trains for a set time. People who've been playing for yesrs have an advantage but you can stil compete simply by focusing in one area rather than branching out. My char has 6.5 mill skill points and can fly battlecruisers, battleships, cruisers and covert ops ships. People with 50 million skill points can probably do all that plus crafting, and flying the more specialised uberships like titans, dreadnaughts and carriers. Unlike every other game, there's no lvl to 70 and make a new char. The characters just keep growing and growing.

There is RP albeit due to the nature of the game there arent really things like combat rules. I'm in the process of applying for an anarchist corporation that basically stages terrorist hit and run strikes on authoritatian groups.

So the game does require a big time investment and can be tedious at times, but it doesnt spoon feed the player like the WoW-clones which have no consequences nor means of affecting the world. Sometime this year they are releasing the upgrade which will let players leave the ships and walk around the space stations which I'm looking forward to. At some time in the future there's hope of atmospheric flight in the planets though if that happens it will be some time away. In brief, EVE has a lot of potential and a lot of freedom.

Combat is basic early on but it becomes more complex later on. There are so many ships and ship configurations it is unbelievably complicated (there are guides on the forums). In fighting there are tactics like maintaining optimum ranges, balancing out the power needs.

i played in beta but got sick of all the bugs everytime i wanted to dock a station...

played it after it came out and was glad to see they got rid of the 5 billion error message popups ye get on each station trip only to discover that the tedium of mining, ferrying, processing, selling, mining, ferrying, processing, selling got me down.

went exploring and had my nice shiney new ship blown to smeg with no insurance (ALWAYS INSURE THE SHIP JIM!)
