First off, its a musical. Now you probably know this, but the amount of people who have told me they didnt I thought it was worth a mention.
Although having never seen the stage play I cannot compare the two.

My second comment is that there is a lot of gore, lots of it, and graphic.

The songs are good, and the plot moves along nicely. Depp and cast do the songs well, even Sacha Baron Cohen does well.

All in all its an entertaining movie, it has something for both the boys and the girls, is quite funny in some places and grim in others.

I loved the movie, in spite of the musical nature of it. I couldn't stop laughing when he sang to his barber-knives

edit : could be mentioned I also love Rocky Horror Show.
