I found this website a while back and have enjoyed reading a lot of it's articles and things on English/British and european martial arts.

I think with martial arts now being considered by many to be an oriental thing, much of our heritage as a warfaring nation has been forgotten. But there was a time when English (or even british) soldiers were some of the finest in the world! and arguably still are.

not through un-armed combat where we? until we got steel we were anyones, and even after that we werent exactly the best defense nation, no your talking about the 1900s and onwards, prior to that we werent much

but seriously, in europe you have greco-roman wrestling, the french have savate (which is much like thai-boxing) and this website even suggests the english had their own form of bare knuckle boxing, which wasn't for sport, and included kicks, gouging and grappling. A friend of mine stumbled across the site when he was trying to find out about Cornish wrestling. There is all sorts of stuff! the site is very eye opening.

There have been manuals written about different fighting styles in europe. the italians, spanish and germans wrote quite a bit about fencing and sword play, but the english had standardised techniques for various weapons also. Take a look at the site and see what you make of it

But basically, the whole world has it's own form of "boxing"; which is a word which generally refers to any sort of unarmed combat.
