GAH! i hate hardware, why can't it just fecking work

so i gets all the bits for my new PC, spend a few hours fitting them all. turned the thing on, lights come on, fans start up, system shuts down, system starts up, lights come on, fans come on, system shuts down and repeat

fecking piece of crap wont even get to BIOS

thinking its possibly a crap PSU at the mo, though the RAM could be dodgy but i don't think its getting to the RAM

so at the mo i have a very expensive pile of metal and wires just sitting on the floor doing nothing

guess i'm gonna have to go buy a new PSU and possibly RAM to work out whats wrong

damn this new fangled crap, if this was the same as my other PC i could swap bits around without spending a fortune getting spares - but then i guess if it was the same as my current PC i wouldn't have bought it

you tried the obvious - unplugging everything except the essentials?

so you just have RAM, CPU, GPU, Motherboard and power supply?

i.e. no hard drives/sound cards etc... etc... just to see if you can get to the bios?

I had exactly that problem... change the PSU no change... changed the PSU again and it worked perfectly. Now I suspect something might have been loose, as one of those psu's was brand new and never used

yeah tried all the obvious - thinking its the PSU tbh, gonna buy a replacement tomorrow and see what happens

Sounds painful. It's a shit when you fork out a huge wad of cash for your dream machine and then it doesn't work, I've been there...

i'm really kicking myself - cus i was flicking between two PSU's and couldn't decide which to buy, i went for the cheaper one, really wishing i'd gone for the expensive one

oh well - at least ebuyer are pretty good at returns, just means it'll be a while before i can get it all working

Could be worse - you could forget to buy a fan for an athalon, and think "I'll just run it up to see if it's working right, then turn it off and buy a fan in the morning" and blow the processor up after only a couple of seconds

The man in the shop said 47 seconds, though I think he plucked that number out of the air...

It was so quick the monitor didn't bother turning on from standby before the computer turned itself off and wouldn't turn on again.

So not long enough to toast marsmallows? Bummer

mmkay, lets see....

got the 4 pin power connector plugged in?
tried reseating the processor?
try setting the mobo, processor and ram up outside the case to make sure nothing is shorting it out.
