Hi, we owuld like to know if you can work 10 hours overtime a week?
Me: Erm....are you going to pay me?
Them: Well, no but we will give you a bonus at the end of the 6 week project
Me: Will that actually be less than the standard overtime rates in total?
Them: errr...errrr....we'll get back to you

Remember when I worked, got a new contract, stated "You will be required to work to the customers needs and wants, this may or may not be including overtime, which if it does, will be part of your current salary. The hours are not set, nor will they be, as it may or may not be occuring during your work time."

Asked about it, basically saying "so...you want me to work overtime, with no extra pay?" answer came back "yeah, but isnt as if the customer'll want it" within the first week they wanted me to do over 10 hours extra...contract never got signed, overtime never came to me unless was paid for :P

This was after I went to the HR department and kicked up a stink mind..overtime and no extra pay? lulwut?

If they can get say 10 employees to do 10 hours overtime each per week unpaid, that is basically a free of charge "Virtual" employee... disgusting.
No job is ever worth that, life is too short, health, family and friends are way more important.

Its not unpaid, its just I think they tried to trick people by offering a project related bonus that would have been less if they had offered overtime

Sorry I was joking earlier by the way, erm anyway if it is a small company then they may be struggling with work hours but should be open to negotiation, if they are fairly large it may be worth reporting if many people are approached on this.

Funny story this turned out to be!

Stalled for a week, then I basically agreed to do it on my terms, in that Friday afternoon they gave me a load of work and then I took it home and did it at my lesuire over the weekend. Because I knew how organised and rubbish they were.

First Weekend: They gave me a few thigns to do, I didnt bother and did them when I came in in the morning on Monday.

Next Weekend: They had nothing to give me

Third Weekend: Same as the first pretty much

Fourth Weekend: Project was nearing completion so wasnt really anything to do.

This week get called into a room, get told thanks for the overtime, we met all the targets and I get a £1k bonus

Which was nice.

I went back and checked all the reports this afternoon, turns out i had still done 37% more work than all the others who were doing the same job anyway (and got the same bonus).

That's pretty cool. Did you have to pay tax on the 1k though? that sucks, I hate it when that happens...

And well sounds like you deserve it if you did alot more work than the others!

I should pluck up the courage to go to my HR then... I have had days of 14 hours (without food mind you), and I had weeks with near 60 hours work time... and I have never been payed, nor even thanked for it. In fact when I once spoke about it I got a "some people complain too much" thrown my direction.
