hi
thank you all for your replies
the reason I am focusing on men specifically is that statistically most players are men and other research would suggest that if playing was associated with any negative outcomes it would most likely be found in men - though its v.rare
re my title is correct - i already have a phd in an associated discipline

I think playing probably has good outcomes! Playing computer games is much better than getting drunk or taking drugs! Always good to get away from reality sometimes! And playing online games is a positive get away!

You cant judge something on how good it is by comparing its relative badness to other things

Beating up two old Ladies is worse than beating up one old Lady, that doesnt make beating up one old lady a good thing.

Playing games is good in moderation, but playing the same game more than 5-10 hours per week is excessive and ultimately unhealthy in general

Harm? Unhealthy in what way? ahh yes. Piles!! Holding it in to keep on going!!!
DArn my eye doth itch from screen radiation!
Worse has to be black jack Bladder, although it is mainly casino goers that get that... *wonders if any gamers have had it*

But what if you switch games in between? is that still unhealthy then? heheh

Id say more than 15 hours total is unhealthy (especially if you work on PCs as well)
More than 10 on the same game also i would class as unhealthy

As to why its unhealthy, Open Question: Who here spends more time than this playing games?

I used to spend more than 15 hours a week playing computer games, but only when I wasn't working or at college, and generally playing that much meant most games lasted less than a week, so I got bored of a lot of games

15 hours in a week? these days i'm doing less than that, but back when i was a student it was quite different

as for unhealthy - in my current situation 20+ hours a week would be unhealthy as it would mean i wasn't eating/sleeping/washing properly but back when i was a student i had no problem with it, but then i had lots of spare time and very little money.

it all depends on your outlook on life, if your aim in life is to have fun and be happy and games do that for you then as long as your sensible (i.e. remember to go to work/eat/sleep etc) then personally i say go for it - course if your aim in life is different (or games don't fullfil that aim) then find something that helps you meet your aim and do that.
