Unhappy Scary monsters........

What are your irrational fears? What scares the crap out of you and where does it come from?
I'll start the ball rolling:
I used to fear the toilet monster, because we lived in a house with no bathroom, and the toilet block was in the middle of the square. (We were reet poor, we moved there from t'shoebox in t'middle o't'road!) You had to take a big old rusty key to the toilet, and there was no light. I always used to get as far away from the toilet as possible before pulling the chain and slamming the door shut before the toilet monster came out and got me!
I also can't sleep with no covering, even when it's really hot. I have to have at least a sheet covering me, and my feet have to be under it, in case someone/something grabs them. Not sure what protection a sheet can give, but it reassures me!

we had the stair monster in our house when i was little ...from my room with the door ajar you could just see the top of the stairs - i was convinced that shadows were something coming to get me!

oh and the stare-y eyes on some of my toys - they used to get put under the bed so they couldn't stare at me while i was going to sleep

But weren't you scared that the toys with the starey eyes under the bed, would grab your ankles if you sat on the edge?

They might have been peeping.
I am also terrified of ventriloquists' dummies, especially ginger ones!

When I was I child the thing that gave me the terrors was the idea that I was the only person awake.... anywhere.

I'd dread the house going to bed, and try to keep mum and dad up for ages because I'd imagine that once everyone drifted off to sleep, I'd be the only person in the whole world who was concious. There was a weird bleakness about that which used to horrify me. Everyone else, snoring zombies, whilst I, a mere child, was the the only person alive. Of course, that meant it was difficult for me to sleep also, and the longer I stayed awake the more frightened I seemed to get.

Eventually, my dad explained to me that because of the way time zones worked, whole *countries* were awake throughout the night. He showed me in an atlas how at two in the morning GMT, people would be getting up and going to work in Tokyo, and after that everything seemed to be fine.

Hmm. Very strange.

i cant remember having irrational fears of things as such - instead when i was around 5 (can remember my age cos of where we were living at the time) i used to have a recurring dream that scared me silly....i was being buried alive by human sized ducks ! To this day still seems a weird dream to have so young.....but not something im gonna dwell on

I can't go to sleep if there is a door open in the room. Wardrobe, room door, nothing as the mosters would get me. I also have to have a covering on and can't sleep with any part of me overhanging the bed.

I also used to have a reoccurring dream that a shark was chasing me up the stairs trying to eat me. Water didnt seem a problem there either.

When I was young, my family had this big house. Right at the top of the house was this strange little room where guests would stay. I was terrified of this room and would never enter it.

Clowns have always terrified me since I was small. I never found them funny at all. They were creepy and scary....

Also in arcades those horrible plastic life size laughing men. I found them horrendous and terrifying as a child.

I used to hate going to Santas grotto as well. No idea why but sitting on this mans knee whispering into his ears gave me the shudders......I always found Father Christmas terriyfing. Perhaps because I figuered out very early that it was someone dressed up...

Oh I had many fears as a kid.
I hated:

Washing machines (I used to have nightmares that a giant mechanical claw would come out and grab me and drag me inside).

Radiators. Not the radiators...but an unseen menace that lived within called...The Bits. The Bits were like miniature daleks equipped with a single, snapping lobster-type mechanical claw (OK, I admit I was scared of claws and hated crabs and lobsters too). They had a single red light for an eye. The clicking/ticking sound radiators make when they're turned on or off was the sound of the Bits snapping their claws. They wanted to come and pinch me. The only way I could escape was via stairs, which they were too small to navigate.

The spare bed in my room: Under it lived a goblin called Migraine (mum had a lot of migraines...guess I knew they were something really bad) that would come out and try to eat me. Migraine had olive skin and black hair like a troll doll, and wore glasses.

Bells (not the sound, but seeing them. There was a church in a road near us that had an exposed bell and I used to make my mum take me another way so I didn't have to walk past it. Then one day I saw a dove...ok, a white pigeon...sitting by it, and I lost my fear of it).

The big oil tank in the shed. Behind it lived a bogeyman who had a disproportionally large head, which was green.

Showers - especially the sort with a large head. Maybe I was in a concetration camp in a former life, but I was terrified of showers turning on when I was near them.

Fountain heads. I loved fountains but also feared them. I particularly hated seeing fountain spouts that were turned off. I guess for the same reason I hated shower heads. I had nightmares of fountains erupting in front of me and me getting consumed. I'm sure Freud would have had a field day with this - however I was far too young to know much about sex!

Wind: There was an attraction called the Cavern of the Four Winds in Battersea Fun Fair and I was scared of the wind sounds in the cave.
I used to have nightmares about the door to my bedroom (which I kept ajar) slamming shut, and then being picked off my bed by winds and hurled about the room.

I had a LOT of nightmares as a child.

The dark, when its pitch black, still don't like the dark too much. But I also don't like having too much light about. If the light switch is too far from my bed I'd have to take a run and jump into it before pulling the covers close about me.
Going up stairs at night, I keep thinking something or someone is behind me. I used to get a really bad feeling of being followed for a while when I was younger.
