Aye but you see it is not the clothes that make you look younger it is your face. The texture of your skin, how many wrinkles you have etc etc.... Some people who are 46 look 35, some who are 30 look 40, it really is down to skin. People who have greasy skin tend to look younger as their skin stays supple. However noone wants to see people dressing younger than they are, it looks ridiculous. Like a mid life crisis. Mutton dressed as lamb as they say same goes for guys who try to dress younger, it just looks really sad.

Pala - no, most older women aspire to look sexy and sophisticated, not like mutton dressed as lamb. I'd rather see Liz Hurley (who's 41 I think) model something and look fabulous, than some 16 year old. Magazines are meant to be aspirational. If a 40-something sees Sharon Stone looking fabulous at 48 then she thinks, hey, I could look that good, whereas seeing a skinny teen in a Versace ballgown is just, ho hum.

The other issue that comes from using teenagers to model adult clothes is that these teen girls quite often are young and gawky and skinny - they've not yet filled out their frames. Adult women can't look like that in clothes, so we're now seeing eating disorders hit older and older women as they try to get down to this ridiculous size zero or thereabouts.

Hanse - bit of a different issue really. I don't like children (I mean 12s and unders by that) wearing clothes that make them look like child prostitutes, but that wasn't what I was talking about. Generally it's lower class women who let their daughters dress that way because they don't know any better.

Not exactly a lower class women problem though, is it? Rich or poor, women are still encouraged to look like that - if anything, the wealther a girls family are the more of the crap she can afford. The same judgements from both parent and children prevails.

Liz Hurley though? Would she make a role model for women? She would, provided she doesn't also encourage women to try starve themselves toward some level of perceived level of skinniness and sexiness, or show off her money maker to promote various brands of clothing as she's paid to.

However, I think she does. That picture was what, 3rd on the google search? The rest aren't far from it. She looks cracking for her age, no doubt. But she's still promoting this much hated sexualised image of women to help herself make more money. I'm not actually sure where I was going with this, I just hate Liz Hurley, but it'll come back to me sooner or later.

I find it really appalling that so many parents buy their little girls Playboy merchandise, without stopping to think of the implications and the history. One of my workmates bought her two young daughters (aged 10 and 12) a Playboy mug each, to add to their collection of other stuff with the bunny logo. I asked her if she didn't think it was wrong to encourage her kids to collect this stuff. She replied that it's "just the fashion now", and I couldn't believe I was hearing this. She said that nobody connects it with the well known porn empire any more, even though it's probably one of the most recognisable logos in the world.
I was glad to see that I'm not the only one who finds this kind of thing repellent. Look here.

I was referring to the way the media mogules look at older women...they seem to think thats the way ye think.

It's also more the lower middle class parents that buy all that crap for thier kids aswell...the types that know no better but can also afford to buy the latest fashionable item for kids...ye dont see many kiddies thongs in Matalan and poundstretcher.

Heh, I work in a stationary shop as the senior sales (meh, weekend job) and its stunning how many 4 - 20 year olds do in fact buy Playboy and another brand called "golddigga". I believe golddigga is also a brand of trashy teen clothing, since I think I've seen girls with those stupid looking puffy coats with the fur balls dangling everywhere got it plastered on their backs around here. Golddigga blatantly isn't making people look like they're ready to go mining any time soon, its pretty safe to say its pointing towards the Anna Nicole Smith kind of gold digging.

Yet parents (in droves, might I add) still buy it for their kids. Perhaps they do or don't connect it with the porn empire or disturbing practice of marrying octogenarian billionaires for their money (the ultimate payday in high-class prostitution you might say) - but I'm willing to put money on the fact their daughters probably have/will make the connection and not most will not care about it. Would say something to the parents about the whole whore/pornstar thing they're encouraging, but then if it costs the store a sale I'd get strung up.

And whats wrong with shopping in Matalan? I quite like it

Didn't see it, but I've seen that wierd "I'm a teenage anorexic" or whatever its called, about a special home for girls with eating disorders. Wasn't really surprising that nearly all of them cited their own ideas of control over whatever aspect of their life they could get their hands on and denounced that it had anything to do with idolising skinny celebrities. What was the SuperSkinny Me about though?
