Question Potrayel of women in the media

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6376421.stm

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/6376367.stm

Looks like finally society has woken up. Recent media coverage of young models starving themselves to death. Do you think in the past women have been potrayed badly? I remember the 80s adverts.... oh my...

Why did it take so long for people to realise? Personally I love the new Dove adverts!

What are your views?

Women should shut up and be sexy. If they fail to do both, then it's to the incinerator with 'em!

Oh alright, I'll admit, I think it's a healthy leap forwards.. I suppose..

Modern feminism is just tedious, tbh.

A quote from one of those articles about the sexualisation of children:

"Clothing, such as thongs, for seven to 10-year-olds"

Who the **** would buy a thing for a seven year old girl?

Or a ten year old girl?

Now that is insane

Not really. I think it is disgusting making thongs for girls who are 7-10 year olds. Did you even bother to read the articles posted on the links?

I agree Callum. I mean why do parents do such stupid things? It is not like they are buying it with their own pocket money.... really sickening really.

I am glad for the Dove commercials and the attention this matter is getting. I have to deal on a daily basis with a 10 year old (my daughter) who is suffering from a negative self image, wich also includes finding herself too fat while this is absolutely not true. The changes in how the skinny models are viewed upon will hopefully in time to come also help me in teaching my child that she is beautiful

Interesting read. Not tedious I can quite assure you! Don't knock it until you have read it!

i have to admit i just skimmed through those articles cause its just more of the same yes the media has a negative effect on women due to how they are portayed yes lots of women are unhappy with their selves for this very reason but its nothing new weve know this for ages wake me up when they actully do something about it. I have a young daughter and im horrified with some of the clothes on offer and until manufactureres are banned from making them and companies banned from advertising towards young girls for unsutible products and girls magazines are banned from using unrealistic body images. and someone force feeds keira knightly and others like her chips until she is a reasonable size again then they can say yes we reconise it till they are blue int eh face im not impressed.

Rarrr rant over

The problem is also all the "womens" and "girls" magazines. On one page they go on about how bad people look being skinny and on the very next page it's lose 10 pounds in 2 weeks.

People should face the fact that there are different sizes and as long as you are healthy then all of them should be acceptable.

Unfortunatly the media dont agree.

p.s. and the "more people thought an exceptionally curvy Martine McCucheon was sexier" wtf she is a size 12!

Martine McCucheon was a size 12 once upon a time... Then I think she discovered the joys of pie and cake (mmm pie...).

Funny thing is articals and studies that show that young girls are negatively influenced by the media have been published almost every month of every year for decades... the media thrill at getting to show these things, then on the next page/tv program show a size 6 stick and call her fat... its a cycle that will continue untill people stop buying those f**king awful gossip/teen/womens magazines that help enforce it - they're the ones who will show a model who's gained 1lb and call her a hippo... or certain news rags (generally with thier titles in white on a red back ground) who will say anyone over a size 2 is horendously fat while also condeming the media (someone should tell them that includes thier own publications) for doing just that.

If we as a nation keep shelling out money for that shit then we will keep being force fed that sameshit... and children will continue to grow up in a world that has this image of beauty.

But as for girls image - it's men in 20 - 30 years I worry for... with games consoles etc becoming more popular than actually playing sports, with obesity on ther rise and PE not being of much importance to schools, I see boys growing into little fat lumps (with massively powerful thumbs) who'll see footballers or olympic athletes and will have thier own crisis - because even if the media and the nation take note of how girls see themselves because of the media, the media and the nation can only think of 1 thing at a time...

Have to agree with Angels, and probably Su-mi ('cos I just know he's going to say what he'll say). Call it pre-emptive agreement. Do people seriously think a guy doesn't look at Brad Pit / George Clooney / whoever the sexiest men alive are and wish they looked a bit more like that already?

Personally I think the problem is how (most) and to what extent (most) of each sex reacts to it. From personal experience, when a guy thinks he's fat he'll probably start going to the gym, cut some snacky foods out of his day and carry on. But most girls I know react by completely stopping eating anything but salad, and drinking water wherever they go out until they reach the point they want to be at.

I'm not saying ALL women do it, I'm not saying NO man does it. But in my PERSONAL experience, women tend to be waaaaay more influenced by what other people say is sexy than men, and act in much more drastic and unnecessary ways through nobodies forcing or judgement but their own.

What pisses me off isn't so much the skinny girls as the fact so many magazines are using very young-looking girls to model for them. If I see a fashion spread with a model who looks about 16, it puts me off the clothes. Sure these girls are pretty, but they belong in Elle Girl or J17, not the style section of the Sunday papers, or older woman mags like Marie Claire. Back in the 80s, the models were still around the same age, but they looked like women. Given that it's the 30 and 40 somethings who have the cash, doesn't it make sense to have the clothes modelled by someone who looks like a grown-up and not some kid trying on mummy's heels?

But then the 30-40 year olds wont get the impression that if they wear the clothes that are modelled they will then look younger themselves.

And you don't factor in the "little girl begging" effect Cal, or the possibility that some mothers actually WANT their daughters to be looking like those magazines show. To you (and me, of course) its disgusting to think of a 10 year old or whatever buying/being bought a thong - but to some mothers probably wouldn't care if their daughters became part of Hugh Hefner's personally playboy bunny outfit.
