Underrated Bands

Discharge – kings of grunge anarcho punk circa 1980 – sold enough singles in their day to make them number one in today’s charts. Went heavy metal late 1980s and paid the price. The inspiration behind bands such as Metallica and Slayer.
Play list – State Violence State Control

The Kinks – 1960s seminal band and classic songsmiths – lost out to the Beatles and Stones in the popularity wars but major influences.
Play List – Best of/Greatest Hits

Dead Kennedys – west coast witticisms and unique sound which made American Hardcore more thoughtful and melodic. More or less invented a new kind of “punk” sound which moves through the Minutemen to Nirvana and on.
Play list – Fresh Fruit from Rotting Vegetables/Moon over Marin

Husker Du – blinding speed based hardcore fused with romantic lyrics and angst ridden soul searching and crushing power chords. Like an American Jesus and Mary Chain the melodies in the songs rise them above their contemporaries. Can attest having seen them live back in 1984 that a live set is mind blowing.
Play List – Zen Arcade

Meat Puppets – Up On The Sun - nuff said. Curt Cobains favourite band mixing Country and Funk and Punk to bring us images of the heat of the desert.
Play List – Up On The Sun/Meat Puppets/Meat Puppets II

Jesus Jones – a British Rage Against The Machine – kind of limp version thereof. Fused pop with a mild grunge sound.
Play List - Liquidizer

Magazine – in the late 1970s a band who played punk old skool style who learned to play their instruments and became a kind of university progressive rock band – but always sticking to their Manchester roots. Massively talented lyricist Howard Devoto is one of modern musics most talented writers. Band members went on to become part of Visage and Nick Caves Bad Seeds.
Play List – Real Life/Secondhand Daylight

Bad Brains – Washington DCs finest all black punk/hardcore/reggae band. Singer can spit out more lyrics per second than a machine gun and the reggae songs are heavier dub than The Clash ever managed.
Play List – Rock for Light

Dead Kennedys are always fun. I have the Give me Convenience or Give me Death compilation which is chocka full of good stuff.

Husker Du I liked in my 20s - I have Candy Apple Grey - but find 'em a bit depressing to listen to now. Bob Mould must have been well down his heroin spiral when he wrote that lot.

Velvet Undergroud. Classic 60s band. My favourite has to be Venus in Furs.

Patty Griffin -completely amazingly talented and overlooked by the mainstream media out here. While her songs are redone by more popular artists and become hits.. !
