17th August

Mayor Sagittarius met me at the gate as soon as I came on duty and reported another murder in the Elven Quarter. I went down there with him so he could show me.

Gwen had already moved the body so no chance of getting any clues from it. Though it happened right outside the Rose and no-one saw or heard anything, not even the gypsies that were hanging round. The victim was a male drow and he died the same way as the others, black tongue and stuff. I didn’t look too closely. Sagittarius suspects Herenui but it’s not likely seeing as all she does is walk round and look dazed and besides she was sort of killed by whatever is doing it.

After we came out of the infirmary someone ran up shouting for help so me and Gwen ran back to the Rose. We found that Herenui had gone in the stable bit and I think used one of the tools to cut her hand off. I did not stay as there were plenty of people so I came back here to report.

Added after: Jordan Smithe came back from the Rose and said Herenui is in the Elven Infirmary place. He said to put that they cauterised her and she’ll probably live.

And another added bit: I’m going to Britain to see if there’s anything happening at the Salty Dog like the Duke asked so will report back later.

*scribbled note attached* Sorry this is late, was writing last night after I got back but went to sleep in the middle.


17th August, continued

Went to Salty Dog as requested, in off-duty clothes. Chatted a bit to the barmaid. Man in yellow hat and black beard was already there but sleeping. Barmaid seemed to know him well. Says his name is Black Tom and he doesn’t normally wear the yellow hat. He wasn’t very friendly, but he was obviously waiting for someone and kept looking at the door impatiently. I gave him some cake and bought him an ale and he became a little bit friendlier though didn’t want to question too much in case he got suspicious. Managed to discover the following:
- he is local to Britain and lives on the east side
- he was a businessman providing services, not specified
- he was waiting for a woman, to do some business with
- he was helping her get in contact with some people
- she needed some people to help her solve a few problems
- she wants certain people removed (he gestured across his throat like cutting it)
- he claimed not to know who these people are
- he also claimed not to know who the woman was but thinks she’s noble

The woman finally turned up at this point but she was wearing one of those monk’s robes with the hood over her face so I couldn’t see it. However her voice was posh and sounded like she’s used to giving orders. I think she was wearing armour under the robe, or maybe has a very large shiny necklace, as I could see gold at her neck. They went to talk downstairs where I couldn’t follow them, so I left and returned to Trinsic in case Black Tom told her that I’d been asking questions and they got suspicious.

22nd August

Went down to the Rose to see if I could get some repairs done but I was a bit late and they were mostly packing up. Herenui was there. She seems to have woken up a bit, but lost most of her memory and isn’t exactly rational yet.

There’s a unicorn loose in the Elven Quarter which is bothering a few people but no actual complaints about it. Jackson came in to hide from the unicorn and asked where she could find a healer who would know about vampiric things. She was worried about a bite on her neck, said she’d lost her memory and didn’t know how it happened. Tried various tests e.g. Stewan gave her some garlic which she ate. Eventually one of the Knights Templar came by so we asked his advice. Then we took her up to the Spirituality Shrine to see whether she could stand being touched by blessed water. Herenui pushed her in which she wasn’t best pleased about, seems not to like the idea of bathing. The Knight did something and talked to Jackson for a while and said she was fine, so she went off to get some sleep and the rest of us went back to Trinsic.

Apparently there was an orc hanging round but it didn’t dare come up to the gate and the Knight chased it off in the end so not a problem. Jordan had a bit of an altercation with a drow (permit supplied) but it didn’t come to anything. Couple of strangers came past but they seemed to know their way around and didn’t want any assistance. Thaur Macil tried to recruit people to burn down the Swaggers but no-one was interested so he left again. Nothing much else to report except the prisoner in cell 2 that tried to assassinate the Duke still won’t talk.

23rd August

Came on duty and town was very quiet. Patrolled round quickly, no trouble. Stewan and Herenui were at the gate. Stewan’s fiancée T’lara turned up and they went off to Spiritwood to visit the tavern.

Then a drow who couldn’t speak any Britannian came to the gate and started making wild gestures up the road, so me and Herenui went to look and found a dead noblewoman at the side of the road. Couldn’t see how she’d been killed, no obvious damage, but she was definitely dead. No identification on her, but plenty of gold, so she hadn’t been robbed. I took the body to the healers and asked them to give it decent burial. There were no clues whatsoever as to who might have done it. As the drow couldn’t speak any Britannian we couldn’t question her. She wandered around after that summoning animals and elementals, and casting spells but only on herself. Seemed a bit mad.

After that a man in shining gold armour carrying a lance and shield rode up to the gate. He didn’t seem very good at riding. Eventually it turned out he was Kaldorian in disguise so I escorted him away and did another patrol round.

24th August

Came on duty, did a patrol round, no problems. When I got back to the gate it was chaos with a small group of Vesperians causing havoc. One seemed quite mad and kept waving a large verite sword around, though he sometimes disarmed if asked. Kept accusing Jordy of killing dogs. Thaur Macil was there, being very nasty to some young lass who just got out of the orphanage called Chloe. Seems she was already unhappy after being bitten by Vad the pain in the neck earlier and having to be chucked in the Spirituality Shrine pond like we did for Jackson. Captain’s orders are now to attack him on sight. That poncy Alaric who works for the Duke came to Chloe’s rescue so we didn’t have to do anything to Thaur this time.

Lord Isidore was going out walking with a young woman called Yasmin who he said was an old friend. He was heading up the Britain road into the woods. I strongly advised him not to go out of the city and in the end he agreed to just walk inside the city. Didn’t see him again after that.

Eventually most of the Vesperians went off but they left a dog behind which the Captain reports is the worst dog ever and she’s killed it dozens of times but it always comes back. It attacked Jordy’s dog Razor and badly injured it it so we killed the Vesperian dog but it got up and walked away. Jordy took Razor to Britain and the vets there managed to patch him up alright. Later that Draxen Davion came back and attacked the Captain because he said it was his dog. We chased him around for a while and he kept running away and coming back. He is as annoying as his dog. But eventually he stopped and everything went quiet, so with Captain’s permission I went off duty.

8th September

Bit late with this report, not written it up for over a week, sorry. Have mostly been on night duty, which was just the usual drunks. Total for week:
• singing drunks: 17 - 3 could actually sing so I let them carry on, rest fined 50 gold each for disturbing the peace
• sick drunks: 9 - cold water thrown over them, made to clear their own mess up, sent home
• violent drunks (other than in tavern brawls): 8 - put in cells to sober up, fined 100 gold each for disturbing the peace
• lost drunks (forgotten their way home): 6 - directed to Rusty Anchor
• unconscious drunks: 4 - checked by healers then put in cells to sober up, fined 100 gold each to cover healers’ and jail expenses
• amorous drunks: 2 - both changed their minds after I armed up
Nothing much out of the ordinary. Keg & Anchor unusually quiet last Thursday and Friday nights though about the same number of customers. Suspect one of the waiters is watering the ale, but I’m not expert enough to know, might just have been a poor batch. Recommend Sergeant Orson checks it. Also noticed a couple of streetlamps needing repair, have notified Clerk of Works.

Last Saturday was the carnival in Magincia which I had to go to as Joe was performing. Large crowd of people from all over but was mostly pretty peaceful apart from that orc who gets everywhere but he got chased off. Some Vesperians started beating each other up, but as they were only hitting each other I left them to it.

There is some man dressed all in red with several large red axes who keeps attacking people and demanding his book back. Reported to me several times by different people. I don’t know where the original book is, but we have a copy of part of it (so do lots of other people I think). It is on the report shelf in the Armoury if anyone wants it.

Have been ensuring the new Recruit Damien earns his pay. He mutters a bit from time to time but he follows orders and is doing pretty well. However, need to keep an eye on Recruit Micah as he seems to be more interested in visiting the tavern and chatting up every woman in sight.
