A cold morning

For hours and hours Gwen waited, lying in the bed she shared with him so often, till exhaustion from the fighting, the worrying and the waiting took over?

She was back on the frontlines in Trinsic, guarding Tabbitha as the woman was picking herself up from the floor, shaking her head dizzy from whatever blow she had received. Gwen still felt anger for things said during the meeting on Monday, but even more from the complaints about someone else arranging a meeting. Who did she think she was that she alone could arrange a meeting for the benefit of Trinsic, telling all others that would do an attempt themselves that they were abandoning Trinsic.

Trinsic does have honor. It?s guards, all the people that can bear arms, they would all do what they can to fight off whatever attacked them.

?I do hope some day you will think better of me...? Gwen turned away from Tabbitha and with that movement all the anger she had felt before vanished. She then threw herself back in the battle against Shadow wyrms, blood elementals, poison elementals and even the Blackrock elemental.

Yet she was overcome with a terrible feeling that she couldn?t describe. Something was wrong? Obviously, with monsters jumping out of a hole? no something different isn?t right.

Will you think better of me as well? His voice suddenly said softly in her ear.

At first her heart jumped with joy, but as she turned? no one was there. Dev ? Dev where are you? She began to walk away from the front, but monsters surrounded her, blocking her way. Panicking she started to shout his name? over and over again.

Echoes sounded in the room, the last fading remainder of her dream. Morning had come already. Again she said his name and felt the other side of the bed. It was cold.

Elise sighed, shuffling through the unfamiliar paperwork for the ninth or tenth time that morning. The previous evening, Devante's bracelet of binding had been found east of the Compassion shrine in Ilshenar, and with him gone, and Felix away at his father's bedside, it had fallen to her to attend to the countless duties of a Captain, despite her Sergeant's rank. There were meetings to attend, cadets to be assessed, offers of diplomacy with the regiment she couldn't sign without a commissioned rank, and a very worried elf pacing around upstairs in the quarters she refused to set foot in these days. Not to mention the arrows she needed to order and the leather she needed to go and buy for new uniform pieces, haggling every step of the way to make the limited gold go further without doing as she normally did and chipping in with her own money.

She rubbed her face wearily and blinked, trying to guess at the time, then turned her attention back to the paperwork. Offers of help had come, both from Kaldor and the Duchy, to get Devante back from wherever he was, but without anything to go on other than a general location, she didn't have a clue where to send a search party. Until those searching found more clues as to where he was, there seemed little point in mounting a rescue, if such was needed. "Some damned honeymoon," she thought to herself, restacking the paperwork and shuffling through it again. She finally made the decision to deal with her own jobs first, and headed out to buy arrows. As she opened the office door, she heard the worried footsteps pace back and forth in the quarters above her, marking the seconds like an unseen clock.

Seconds they couldn't afford to lose, but could do nothing with, except pace, and wait for news.

Poke ! Poke ! Devante was rudely woke up by a stick being jabbed at his ribs, as he opened his eyes he could see nothing, either he had gone blind or he was in a dark room, it was hard to tell. Devantes head hurt, a side effect of the poison that had brought him down during the fight.

"et es time" a voice spoke, the voice was not that of a Britannian, Devante could tell Britannian was not the speakers first language either.

"Time for tea ?" Devante replied, showing his captor that his resistance had not broken down.

Devante sat up, his hands were tied behind him with rope and he sat on what felt like wet grass. He could not figure out where he was or who was holding him, It could be the Brigands who had attacked him whilst he was making sure the moongate was clear for the Duke. He could have been sold into slavery. Maybe he was in Yew, although they would not have hid themselves. Perhaps the Undead, they didn't need light. So many enemies in Britannia, so many possibilities.
Suddenly a door swung open and there was light, blinding light......He heard a commanding voice telling people what to do, but not in a language he could understand, suddenly he was pulled up, a man from what he could see walked towards him made eye contact and grinned.

"You belong to me now" the commanding voice said before blowing somesort of powder at Devantes face.....

Then came sleep and darkness again...

The scent of the drug smoke seemed to fill every crevice of Devante's skull, swamping all thought and reason, the only thing to be heard was the thud of drums and wild shrieks, human or animal he could not have said even while sober. He had been blind for as long as he could remember.
A voice drifted through the fog, carrying a single statement.

“All that you are, you will no longer be.”

He lost conciousness before he could make sense of it.

-

“Our lessons shall begin” said the voice.
His mind awoke to find his body locked in sitting position, crosslegged. Total paralysis had taken hold of him, leaving him capable only of listening. So he listened. A book opened with a creak, followed by the whisper of pages turning. The voice then began to read, strange words with no meaning. He slipped into sleep without knowing it.

He was buried up to his head in an impossible desert. Perfectly flat white sand stretched into infinity in each direction. An open book lay in front of him. He tried to read, but the words squirmed under his gaze and defied definition. He was still struggling with the first word when it wrenched itself clear off the page and onto the sand. He stared at it in facination as it lay there and began to reform its strokes and serifs into the body of a thin spider. Facination turned to horror when the spider scutted towards him, past his head. He felt the feathery brush of its legs as it climbed inside his ear. The rest of the chapter followed it, ignoring his screams.

-
The book snapped shut, his eyes snapped open.
